Recent trouble downloading TV shows

Postby waterboy » Mon Oct 09, 2017 4:54 pm

I've long used usenet to download recent TV shows. I've been satisfied with this for years. There have been occasional rough times, but usually okay.

The last few weeks have been very rough.

Has something happened?

Sometimes people just stop posting. But more and more posters are obfuscating their post subjects so they are harder to find. Not sure which explains why the stuff you are looking for isn't showing up but we are working on a way to ID the obfuscated posts so we can show them in search results. We'll make some announcement when it is in place.

That ability, while greatly welcomed, I expect will also be an emotional roller-coaster. I'll be excited to find the obscured title but quite sure that more oft than not it'll be PW protected. After the latest Deutschland heavy-hand usenet is now littered with unusable postings (obfuscated & PWP).

Our search engine can ID password protected files and you can tell Newsbin not to display them. By default Newsbin will fail a password protected download if the password isn't in the password list.

Yes, and that is absolutely a fabulous feature. I'm sure it's saved me uncountable TBs of traffic and wasted time over the many years I've enjoyed being a customer of NBP with integrated search. (envision a wink emo here. Unable to insert as I'm tagged unregistered(?))

I've noticed similar problems as you've described. I'm not sure the mechanism that generates NZB's, so I might be totally off on this assumption, so here goes.
When this problem started me in the last month, I started searching for NBZs from indexers. What I found was that Ginga and NZB planet showed the posts, but they had a "pre" tacked on to the end. Ginga allows 3 downloads a day free, and planet 5, but planet does not allow you to download the "pre" files.
My assumption is that whatever generates the NZB files is now making "pre" files that are not forwarded to the rest of the usenet world, making it easy for the indexers to restrict non-paying customers.

I don't know if you all saw the News but the people running the Teevee and Moovee IRC channels have shut them down. I'm not sure what it means long term. Maybe fewer bot posted things and more individuals posting like in the old days.

I'm really am trying to be a glass-half-full guy like you. A positive spin for me is that I may now get more of the things done that I've been putting off in lieu of the great usenet tracking challenge. ; )

Please tell me where I can look for your announcement; my teevee search results stopped updating November 18th.

I've been using the search term "teevee" for many months and finding enough shows I like from a.b.teevee.
Using that search lately produces no results after 11/18/2017.

Today I searched for "<something>" and I got the latest show dated 11/23/2017 and it was in a.b.teevee group.

When use search term a.b.teevee or teevee there is still nothing newer than 11/18/2017.

Why is this happening?

You are at the mercy of people willing to post content. Whoever was posting the content you were looking for happened to stop after November 18. That is the reason.

When you're searching, you need to search for something. It was just an accident that the people posting what you wanted to download included "teevee" in the subject. Those guys aren't posting anymore but other people are posting using different names.

If you want to see a wild card of the group, you'd need to tell search to only look in that group and use a blank line for the search string. You tell newsbin what groups to look in by using the "Search in Group" drop down.

1 - From the Group Add window subscribe to alt.binaries.teevee
2- Assuming that's the only group you're using, select "Unsorted" in the "Search in Group Topic" drop down.
3 - Hit the search buttons.

You should end up with a list of files from teevee. If you use the "Min Size" filter set to 200 megs, you'll filter out a bunch of crap.

If you subscribe to other groups, I recommend making a new group folder then moving "teevee" into that filter then using that folder name in the dropdown.

You can also just type the full group in the "Search in Group/Topic" i.e.

1) Type "alt.binaries.teevee" into the Search in Group/Topic field
2) Either clear the "Search" field out or enter an asterisk "*" then click the Search button or hit Enter.
