Newbie question: VPN limited to NB only?

Postby nbwul62 » Sun Sep 17, 2017 11:37 am

Up front: as for the use of VPN - I am a total newbie.

My usenet server offers VPN services.
The service is included in my subscription, however, I have never used it so far.

Have a question with regards to setting up VPN.

I have on hand a 'manual' as to how to set up a VPN, e.g. for Windows 10 PPTP Setup

1) Push the Windows key and type 'vpn' and click 'Change virtual private networks'
2) Click "Add a VPN connection" in the Network & Internet Settings window
3) When the "Add a VPN connection" window pops up, fill in the following information:
- VPN provider: select Windows (built-in) from the drop down
- Connection Name: type name that you will recognize for the connection
- Server name or address: enter the server address from our list
- VPN Type: select the Point to Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) from the drop down
- Type of sign-in info: leave the default User name and password
- User name: type your Newshosting username followed by @ispname
- Password: type your password
- Remember my sign-in info can be unchecked if you would like to login each time you connect
4) Click the connect button on the VPN you created, after which you should be connected.

Two questions:
1. Is it possible to use VPN for NewbinPro only?
2. What are the drawbacks?

Any further comments will highly be appreciated!

Thanks

Theoretically you should be able to set windows such that most connections don't go through the VPN but only special connections to special destinations use it. To Windows a VPN should just be another interface meaning you ought to be able to use routing to direct just connections to the news server through the VPN. I've done this with multiple physical interfaces but not with a VPN so, you'll probably have to put some research into it.

That said, if you're doing this from home a VPN doesn't buy you much. It should be slower than not using one.

Thank you very much.

Background of this enquiry is that I wish my IP not be traceable, at least not when using NB Pro.

Right now NB is set to log in in to the usenet server (username+pw required) and is using a SSL connection only, i.e. no proxy is set.
I believe having read somewhere that using SSL makes it impossible to detect what actually is being downloaded(?)
and in that sense VPN isn't really necessary?

SSL encrypts the data so nobody ought to be able to tell what you're downloading. Since you're only connecting to the news server. Only your ISP and News server know you're using usenet. If you're trying to hid the fact you're using usenet from the ISP, even if they can't tell what you're using it for, a VPN might be worth it.

Many thanks!
I'll need to reconsider VPN then.
Maybe it is not really worthwhile in this scenarion.

Thanks again.

I don't use one from home. If I traveled and was always using someone else's wifi, I'd certainly use one.
