I am experiencing similar problems with b5, not previously.

1. Download stalls due to missing pieces, assemble incompletes everything goes grey but nothing moves, run quickpar and some of the parts are missing (no sign of them anywhere).Restart Newsbin, the missing parts are assessed as missing and downloaded again, repeat until lucky.

2. Downloads in progress, Restart Newsbin, some/all works in progress lost.

Possible resolution to 1-2;

I moved the data directory to a share (autoload and download directory already there) which is not virus checked (Avast WHS version), appears to be OK. Odd.

3. Retry download doesn't appear to work (used to get grey bits showing what was known good) now just sits there staring at me doing what it was doing or not doing, as appropriate.

Regards,
Francis.

B6 has been available for some days now. You should see if that helps.

Automatic retry download is in B6. Been working on it.

This isn't odd at all. Avast is hostile to downloading.

So it ought to be, I meant odd in the sense that it had never previously been implicated in any hostilities on my system prior to b5.

Francis.

Yes it works much better in b6, thank you, the rate of progress is impressive. My recollection (possibly faulty) was that it made the entries on the selected line(s) affected grey and retried the incomplete and dead entries. On b6 there is no greying out of the successful, but all dead (red) blocks for the entire twistie are retried, I didn't notice the retries taking place pror to b6, I do miss the greying out which signalled the extent of the success but that's neither here nor there.

Assemble incompletes appears to apply to selected line(s) within a twistie, but retry download appears to apply to the entire twistie, not an issue, just an observation.

Regards,
Francis.

Retries are "per chunk" now and it doesn't touch successfully downloaded chunks so, yeah the whole thing doesn't turn gray.

Avast should be hostile to malware, not to the basic operation of the PC. Since most people do nothing more than browse the web and read email, that's what the virus scanners are tuned for. When you're downloading from usenet, your PC is more like a server than a regular PC. Server loads and server level processing. Virus scanners in general, aren't tuned for this work load and cause probably 70% of our tech support. Usenet is treated like email, which it's nothing like any more.

No V scanner focuses on Usenet so, it's not really a wonder they don't get it right. The only one I've found that doesn't get in the way is "Microsoft Security Essentials".

Neither is email, unfortunately. People seem to think it's web, nowadays:-(
