Is downloading headers automatically done in compressed mode. Astraweb says to enable header compression, but I can't seem to find how to do it. Which makes me wonder if it is now automatic with the new beta. Then again I could easily be missing it ... DOH!

It's automatic. You can disable it but, it's on by default. The old method required you to turn it on.
