XFEATURE COMPRESS GZIP | 500 Unsupported but XZVER is

Postby Ellipsis » Wed Dec 06, 2017 4:54 am

Hey,

It seems like Newsbin dropped support for XZVER in favor of XFEATURE COMPRESS GZIP.
Many servers don't seem to support XFEATURE COMPRESS GZIP, but they do support XZVER.
Can we have the option to use XZVER again for compression instead of uncompressed when servers support it.
Especially when providers like usenet.farm charge header bw on block accounts.

news.usenet.farm - still uses xzver, but not XFEATURE COMPRESS GZIP (this is the provider that counts header bw towards block usage)
news.cheapnews.eu - still uses xzver, but not XFEATURE COMPRESS GZIP
------------------------
ssl-us.astraweb.com - still supports xzver, but also supports XFEATURE COMPRESS GZIP
eunews.blocknews.net - still supports xzver, but returns multi-line 224 instead of single line, but also supports XFEATURE COMPRESS GZIP
usenet.premiumize.me - no compression of either type, only multi-line over

I noticed that header downloads from Ninja seem to take a lot more bandwidth than usual. Recently I redownloaded a large group's headers and I had to split it over two months so I wouldn't go over my ISP cap.

Headers in general are huge. It's about 300-350 bytes per line. Some of the large groups have over 2 billion headers. The largest is about 6 billion headers.
