Thank you Quade, i'll look into my router, it is wired but maybe not fast enough after all.

I'll try to find the error, but it eludes me so far.

I'd be looking closely at your system or network. The beta has seen intensive testing by the IRC testers and this was never an issue.

Cache only impacts file downloads. I have a feeling your connections are dropping out under load. Maybe the router. It's hard to say. Might try setting the server to a single connection and try a header download and see what happens. Then maybe throttle the speed down and try again. If you're on a wireless connection, I'd wire in. Usenet and Wireless don't really get along. It'll sort of work but, wireless is inherently unreliable.

Hello,

I'm having the same problem.
Old version (5.59) on 2nd PC has absolutely no problem - so I doubt it being a network problem (also worked without problems till the installation of 6.00B1 on this PC).
But it only happens to me at groups with a large amound of headers.

Well certain servers will dump the connection after X bytes of data is transferred on it. Astra for instance. I don't think the issues sound the same. My impression was the original poster couldn't download headers at all.

I've completely reinstalled it - now the download works.
Seemed to be an upgrade-issue from version 5.

Clicking "Clear" un-clears search results

Steps to reproduce:

1. Search for something with Internet Search
2. Click "Clear Results" ==> The results are cleared (okay)
3. Click "Clear" ==> The search term is cleared (okay), but the search results are displayed agein (not okay)

Is it normal that converted headers take up about 2.5x more space in V6? My old 5.59 Spool_V1 folder is 426mb, when converted to 6.00B1 my Spool_V6 folder is now 1GB? Selected all my groups, right clicked and imported 5.xx headers as per instructions so I don't think I did anything wrong. Deleted the Spool_V6 folder and tried the conversion again with the same result, Spool_V6 is 1GB.

View > Servers is greyed out, is it hooked up? Will the Server TAB be dockable?

Is compact mode always forced on now in the post list due to problems reported in release notes? Will an option to turn it off or on be available?

1 - Don't know. In my testing it was within spitting distance of the RV4's. That was a couple versions ago though.

2 - No and I'm not sure I'm going to add a server tab. Still up in the air. Since you can turn it off, there might not be any downside to adding it except, it's one more thing to maintain

3 - There is no compact mode any more. In the sense that there's nothing to turn on or off. That's the only display there is. I'm unclear what the release notes say. The new mode is partly why header loading is both so quick and uses so little RAM.

Tomorrow I'll start with a fresh install of v6 and pull headers again from the same groups and see what the difference is from 5.59, could be my multiple upgrades of NB over previous versions has confused it!! I assume both the Storage.db3 and StorageData.db3 files are needed in the groups folder in Spool_V6?

Both are needed. It might just be bigger. My Spool_v6 is 106 gigs. In hindsight, 1 Gb is pretty small.

I have 20 groups with 7 days of data, and my spool_v6 folder is 1,14 Gb. Boneless is one of the groups and that one alone is 560 Mb so it all depends on how busy your groups are, and how many days you have set it up to keep.

I never pull headers form high traffic groups like boneless etc, I use NZB's mostly for them, but I have 9 low traffic groups that I do pull headers from and now the storage for those groups has increased or more than doubled in V6, I always keep 900 days of headers. Pulling fresh headers in v6 I get 1.02GB for those 9 groups, in v5.59 I get 426mb.

One example, in v5.59 one group uses 4.96mb in v6 it uses 7.58mb, not 'double' in this instance but another group in v5.59 uses 269mb and in v6 it uses 669mb for the new headers, now that is 2.5x the storage. With folder compression on I can get the 1.02GB total down to 774mb but that's still nearly 2x as much and If I compress the 5.59 Spool_V1 folder I get 165mb for the same headers, so 774mb v's 165mb is quite a surprise.

Just to report that the promises were delivered on the download speed. Even on a system with regular hard drives. With 200MB parts it still managed to keep a steady line: http://img593.imageshack.us/img593/750/ ... 00mbfi.png

Thanks a lot for all the work on this release. I'm perfectly happy with this beta. For my sake you can already go ahead and release it!

Sweet! B2 has fixes to make it even more flatlined when downloading.

Maelstroem, I can't really get my panties in a knot over 1G of disk space. I can say that picture groups are surprisingly larger than non-picture groups because picture groups don't get any logical compression. The high post count groups pack many more files together in the same space. Not sure I can tell you anything other than "that's the way it is".

Excellent!
Do these fixes relate to the (reported problems with the ) download speed while newsbin is also extracting? Or are they improvements to the 'in RAM checking/decoding" while downloading feature?

It's a change in how I verify the files for Autopar. Some tweeks to the multicore repair code too.

Well If I'm the only one concerned about it then that's fair enough, just wondered what had changed and why the RV4 format was far more efficient. I never use the picture database anyway so it's not that making it larger.

One thing I did notice, downloaded some 15mb files and in the download list the odd one showed something like 29,000/15,000 in the Size column not 15,000/15,000 (think these were stalling on 1 block and so had to use 'retry download' ) so it looked like it had downloaded double the data yet the file was the correct size and not corrupt.

With software, it's all trade-offs. The RV4's were a very dense format but, they were slow to load and slow to process. The DB3's are larger but, they're easier to search through and faster to load.

Hi NB guys:

Thanks for the beta, some suggestions, comments and questions:
1) Newsbin is not cleaning up after itself (leaving par files behind when done).
2) Is it possible to put the "Group" screen in the bottom or top like other screens (currently using the side pop up).
3) Would be nice to have the top screen's close tab "x" on the actual tab (and not on the right).
4) If autopar can not decode due to encrypted files or any other reason how will I now know?
5) I don't understand the "date" field in the download tab. I think it should display remaining time (as a count down).
6) When a download fails , the icons do not change to show why in the "failed downloads" screen. Example: duplicates used to be "D".
7) Would be great to be enter the Filter's Min Max fields with my own size (or at least add "2G").
8) Please explain "load older" and "load newer" buttons.

Many thanks, appreciate being able to make a good thing even better.

2 - doesnt look like it is currently available to put other than the left hand side, dont forget this is a first release beta
3 - this has been asked for
4 - open the first file, dont forget this is beta and work in progress, password protected files should hopefully be in the next beta
5 - do you mean the date it was posted? as thats the only date i can see
7 - custom filters have been asked for
8 - exactly what they mean, it will load posts say 30 days older than you are currently displaying

Thanks Richy99

1 - not seen it myself, is it extracting them ok?
Reply: Yes extracting ok, but i now have to delete the par files it leaves behind in the download folders.
2 - doesnt look like it is currently available to put other than the left hand side, dont forget this is a first release beta
Reply: OK
3 - this has been asked for
Reply: OK
4 - open the first file, dont forget this is beta and work in progress, password protected files should hopefully be in the next beta
Reply: What I was looking for is more information from the download status field (instead of just colors). it would be nice to see "downloading" or "decoding" or "error" when a par set is missing a rar file.
5 - do you mean the date it was posted? as thats the only date i can see
Reply: In the download field the "date" field should countdown to show remaining time for that line.
7 - custom filters have been asked for
Reply: OK
8 - exactly what they mean, it will load posts say 30 days older than you are currently displaying
Reply: OK thanks

1 - Are the pars combined with the files or separately listed in the download list when you download?

2 - Sure. You can move it wherever you want. First you have to "Pin" it. Click the pin to lock it expanded, then you can drag it wherever you want.

3 - If you right click a tab, you get a menu. You can close it from there too. X would be nice I agree.

4 - Can't yet.

5 - I think I intended it to let you sort by data and re-order the downloads that way.

6 - Yes, on my todo list.

7 - I've been wanted to find a decent list of "usenet compactible" size ranges. The current ones are arbitrary. If you want to suggest a range of sizes, without mentioning specific downloads, I could look into changing things around.

I cannot figure out how to do this. Wherever I move it, as soon as it is docked, it's back to the left side... (Not the only thing in the new interface I'm apparently too st00pid to handle...)

Not sure what to tell you. Mine's docked on the left. I open it, click the "Pin" then grab the top border and dock it top, bottom and right hand side.

I finally managed - I had to do two things I hadn't done before:
* Move the mouse pointer to the little square thing on top (which meant moving the window half-way onto the other monitor:-))
* Check auto-hide after the above.

Thanks!

Is this docking interface described anywhere? I haven't seen anything like it, before, and at least to me, it's rather non-intuitive... (I'm an OpenBSD/Solaris user, and I've been using mostly the same .twmrc since 1990:-))

Fields (From/To) are filled wrongly by default and entered selection is not being processed.

Is Quick UnRAR/Sample working from the 'Files' TAB? Couldn't see anything in the release notes.

I've just tried to join a couple of split AVI's, xxx.avi.001, xxx.avi.002 etc and NB reports: "Quick UnRAR: No Filename found". If I click the OK button NB shows the 'Quick Decode' dialogue and does nothing, clicking the 'Cancel' button does nothing either, NB has to be ended in Task Manager.

Tried a couple of different files with the same result.

What RAR's? I'm having trouble rejoining split AVI's, not actually tried RAR's though.

*EDIT*
RAR's seem to be OK, xxx.part001.rar, xxx.part002.rar extract using Quick UnRAR/Sample.

If there are par files, Newsbin joins split files automatically so no "Unrar" is needed. That's probably 50% of what I download.

These are Mastersplitted AVI's (not RAR'd up) and there are no PAR files! It worked fine in 5.59 for selecting the first few files and joining them to preview the AVI.

I tried to move the thumbnails tab up next to the post list so I can view one or the other while keeping other tabs in view at the bottom. Couldn't do it but accomplished nearly the same thing by auto-hiding the thumbnail tab at the top. I understand that the thumbnails should not paint while hidden but when I hover over or click to make the tab visible it should start painting - it doesn't unless I remove the auto-hide condition. This makes the auto-hide of the thumbnail tab mostly useless.

BTW, I like v6.
