six needs a fix

Postby lesgrandfomage » Wed Apr 13, 2011 12:27 pm

Hi
I went back to 5.again. I need to be able to turn off compact view. the way you have V 6 setup makes it just about unusable for me. very disappointed. please consider making a change.
John.

its being discussed, the compact mode was one of the fundemental changes in 6 to make iot load large groups quicker and into less ram

dont forget v6 is still beta and subject to change, probaly best you hang on using v5.59 until 6 is either release candidate or released

You old timers can stick with 5.59. I'm all right with that.

Compact mode is here to stay. Still thinking about a single button "expand/contract" (which you can do now, sort of) though. In that way, <Snark removed> and the people who like compact mode don't get stuck with the RAM and performance hit of expanding everything.

There's no winning either way so it's not clear to me that there is a solution that'll make everyone happy.

Spool loading in 5.59 is pretty horribly slow and consumed too much RAM. But, the old timers like how they can scroll and eyeball the lists in high speed. 6 speeds up loading and reduces RAM use but, the people who depend on the specific look of the post list, aren't happy. 5.59 is always there for you and as I said, I might give you a way to expand the list with one button, basically making it as slow or slower than 5.59 to load but, making it look sort of like how you like it.

I know I can't make everyone happy.

Compact is one of the major features of v6. If you don't like it, the two key shortcut(possibly a single button or option in the final) gets you back to expanded and nested, even easier to peruse than 5 since the nesting breaks up the list more but you still get to keep all that endless scrolling. If you really really dislike the fact of compact, and just plain don't want it, I really don't think you're missing all that much by sticking with 5. It's going to be quite usable for quite some time. If a single button 'expand' does show up in the final, I would think that addresses most of your issues, no? I really don't see this as any kind of abandonment...

I've grown to like the compact mode. Now if you could compact those posts that don't compact you would make me happy.

It's Usenet, it's always a work in progress. Some people purposely post in screwed up ways to avoid compaction. So, yeah, improvements are never ending.

You're only an old timer if you think like an old timer. You know the "get off of my lawn!" type of old timer.
