Version 6.00 Release Candidate 2

This is the place to help test and discuss Version 6 Beta releases.

Version 6.00 Release Candidate 2

Postby dexter » Thu Jun 09, 2011 11:44 pm

Release Candidate 2 includes a couple of bug fixes. There will be an RC3 as Quade is still working on a few more bugs.

Summary:

  • Fixed issue with bandwidth limiter taking 100% CPU
  • Fixed issue with master splitter files getting deleted on failed decode (introduced in RC1)
  • Added ability to turn off the task bar progress indication (details in release notes)

More details are on the Newsbin Beta Page, along with the download link. People using download managers may have problems getting the download to work. If possible, disable your download manager before trying to get the beta. If it won't work, PM me and I'll send a direct link.

If you find anything that should keep this from being the final Version 6 release, reply to this thread or create a new post in this forum. You can also contact us directly through our Technical Support Form or swing by our irc channel. It's #newsbin on irc.newsbin.com.

I noticed that this is the first NB version that is translated into German. I would not have expected such a big change in RC2. As you can see in the screenshot, there are a number of problems with the translation. But the most important question for me is: How can I switch back to English? I want to have the user interface in English (though I am German).

As I understand it to get German you must have installed a custom German version of the Newsbin Language.dll file? If so putting back the one that ships as standard with Newsbin (making sure Newsbin is not running while doing this) should re-instate English. I am guessing that the easiest way might be to simply re-install Newsbin?

I would also like to have the choice... Newsbin DLed a languagex64.dll during the install, and now I have a French version of NB :)

(There is an old languagex64.dll.old in the NB folder, renamed it languagex64.dll, got my newsbin back to English)

I'd definitly appreciate to have the choice, thank you :)

I did not realise that Newsbin install automatically downloads a language specific variant of the language.dll file! That means my earlier suggestion of simply re-installing to get back English will not work.

It might be worth checking the date on that language.dll.old file? Possibly the installer first uses the english one from the install package, and then renames it if it subsequently gets a language specific version. That would certainly be sensible behavior as it would mean that failing to get the language specific variant would not be fatal. However I guess it might be necessary to wait for Dexter to get a definitive answer on how the installer works?

It will show your Windows install language as the default choice but you can choose any language on install. Just run the installer again and choose your language of choice.

The translations are done by volunteers and may be incomplete. There are also some sizing issues as the translations are often longer than the original English wording so some things may run together before we can go through and re-size everything.

If you want to volunteer to clean up the language translations, check out the Translation Wiki and PM me or contact me through the tech support form.

Dex is out this morning. I was pushing him to get this out and the installer might not have been 100% ready (my fault).

I was testing repair last night, 64 bit worked 100% but, 32 bit did not. If you have problems with 32 bit repair (it repairs but, the files remain in the download list). I already have a fix that's awaiting dex's return. Running an older 32 bit par DLL might solve it too.

I just uploaded a new RC2 installer build that forces to English. I was experimenting with having the windows language version install automatically but I though you could override it if you still wanted English. Apparently not. I need to work on it more.

This build also has new par2dll.dll files. Quade found that 32 bit repair wasn't working. I've tested and it does now.

Still problem with image groups not showing all downloaded headers, maybe force NB to do a 'show posts' after a header download as that shows and sorts all the posts!!

Delete the existing Language.dll and try installing again.

Wonder if you got a cache copy of the older one and not the latest?

Hi

1) Newsbin still does not autopar sets that do not have par files (this happens alot).
It just sits there in the "Download list".
Also, when I manually Autopar it does not delete the files after it is done.

2) Could you please put an Autopar icon in the "download list".
It is not intuitive that the "Files list" has an Autopar icon but the "download list" does not.

Thank you.

I have no file Language.dll. However, I have a file languagex64.dll. Deleted it, installed again -- still German. I also have a file languagex64.dll.old. After deleting that file, the installation failed ("cannot install, is Newsbin running?"). Restored both files so that I have at least Newsbin with the German GUI. I can live with that.

I am quite sure that I don't have a cache copy. Did a file compare and both files were different.

AutiPar only works with file sets that have accompaning PAR files. I hardly ever see rar file sets that do not have a PAR2 file anymore.

File sets that do not have an accompanying PAR file are therfore deliberately left in the Download list so that you can decide what action to take on them.

-1 - Yeah it doesn't. What are you finding all these parless rars? .....alt5?

-2 - Like a "QuickUnrar" in the download list toolbar? I could probably do that.

Brute force way to get it back is download the language pack from the Newsbin Translation Site and install the language you want. It really sounds like either you are getting a cached copy of the installer or I'm really missing something. I might have to install German windows and see what's going on.

Thanks, the language pack did the trick for me.

After installing the language pack, NB was in English. Then, just for fun, I installed RC2 again (the version which should force English), and NB was in German again. So obviously the mechanism which should force English does not work.

Regarding cached copy: All I can say is that when I do a file diff on both versions of RC2, they are different.

By the way: In my opinion it would be good to have a menu item in the program itself to change the language on the fly.

And one last thing: When changing the language, I had to reset the GUI, otherwise some areas in the program remained in the old language. Resetting the GUI is always a pain. I hope that in the future you find a solution which does not require to reset the GUI. No other program I know requires to reset the GUI.

I can't recreate your problem. Maybe change back to default settings to narrow down what your issue may be. Set Chunks/Memory back to 200 and see if you still have the problem. You running 64 bit XP? I didn't try this on 32 bit, maybe that's the issue.

Im on win xp sp3 32 bit

i set to 200\200.

i dont see any errors downloading this release but my speed drops to 1MB from 15-16MB constantly and inconsistent because cache is almost always = 0

i dont really get why other releases dont have any problems with 1500\1500 settings.

I was just wondering what meaning stands behind this fileiothread internal crash. What it refers to.

PS ive been playing with chunk\memory setting... it turns out that it is memory setting that causes it for this particular release, not chunk.. which is strange because i have enough memory to sustain 1500MB .

For this release i cant set memory size >=500. NB starts getting errors

PPPS
cache 10000(doesnt matter if its lower, then it just drops speed heavily), memory 400

everything went fine with no errors until the end (6Gb of 7+gb)when i got 900 FileIOThread - internal crash
then NB started processing download(download stopped and NB kept increasing the size of download from 6 to 7 Gb., processing downloaded files, then everything stopped.

here is what i have

Image

assembling incompletes didnt do anything too

im sorry for asking but did nb6 get properly tested on 32 bit systems?

Sounds to me like you're simply running your machine out of RAM. Chunk cache of 1500 = about 900 megs of ram (could be easily double that). Then the memory cache, being "Per file". If you're downloading and have incomplete files, you might store N incomplete files in memory. If the files are 100 megs each then the amount of RAM used is 100 megs * incomplete files.

So, it might happen with a set with lots of incompletes where it doesn't happen with other files.

You're running your machine on the ragged edge, it's not surprising you're encountering weird issues. 64 bits is the the primary platform. 32 bits doesn't get as much testing. With 32 bits, there's a hard RAM limit of 3 gigs so, you have to live within that limit.

As for why you get the fileio errors, I have no clue. It's never happened to me. There's some edge condition that's only coming up when you push the limits.

a hard RAM limit of 3 gigs

actually its a bit more. 3.5

I like the explanation and it can be so..

unless Task Manager lies.
I always have no less than 1,5 GB RAM free Well, at least TM shows it. And ive never had more than 1800Mb ram consumed by NB6..aaccording to TM as well..

1800 MB "MemUsage" as reported by Task Manager on Windows 32-bit is way into "why hasn't this been killed yet" territory!

You're on Windows 32-bit so the maximum VM size for a single process is 2 GB, unless you're running with the special boot switch (may be default on some Windows Server versions) and the program in question is flagged as IMAGE_FILE_LARGE_ADDRESS_AWARE, in which case the limit is 3GB. One of the better summaries I've found on this: http://dwf.blogs.com/beyond_the_paper/2 ... vista.html

I have no idea if NewsBin Pro 32-bit was compiled with that flag or not, but I suspect it's unlikely, and since you didn't mention running with that switch it's likely irrelevant anyway. But it nicely documents the VM size limit.

The Task Manager reports the Working Set which is useful, but it's not the Virtual Memory size which is what causes programs to be killed due to "out of process VM". "Working Set" is the amount of physical memory currently allocated to the process.

The Virtual Memory size includes all of the Working Set, but also include additional shared libraries (shared with other programs), anything sent to swap, anything allocated but not used! and several other things using VM space so it usually larger or much larger than the Working Set.

To take one example, at the moment my 32-bit Newsbin Pro has a 510 128 kB "Mem Usage" in Task Manager, but if I look at it via Process Explorer I see that the "Virtual Size" is 1 603 692 kB. This is because it's loaded some larger groups earlier, but it's been left idle for hours so most of it has been kicked out.

By enabling some additional columns in Process Explorer I can see that the "Peak Working Set" is 755 656 kB, which means that the "Mem Usage" in Task Manager never exceeded that value, even though the VM size is nearly 1.6 GB, not that far from getting Newsbin Pro killed!

If you want to know what's really going on in your machine you really need to be running Process Explorer, this applies to both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows. I suggest adding Virtual Size, Process I/O Delta Total Bytes and Base Priority columns to the display. You can ask it to replace Task Manager, most people I know does that on all their machines :-)

Just to be clear, all this is completely unrelated to how much physical memory Windows 32-bit can use, I'll comment a little about this because a lot of people mix these together even though they're completely unrelated.

The short answer for how much physical memory you can access in 32-bit Windows is:
4GB minus whatever the memory hole size is, usually this is 3-3.5GB depending on BIOS and what graphics card you have, but more or less than this do happen. A few Windows server versions support more memory even in 32-bit mode!, but both 32-bit and 64-bit mode is also limited by what your Motherboard chipset can handle (if it's older and not a workstation chipset it probably can't address more than 4GB anyway).

On 32-bit Windows you can use excess memory as RAM disk if the chipset can address >4GB, sometimes using excess memory this way can make sense. Depending on the features of the chipset and BIOS the memory hidden by the "memory hole" mentioned above (256MB to 1GB) is either completely unaccessible OR show up above 4GB. Recent desktop chipset allow 8-48GB of addressable memory and support "memory hoisting" to move the hidden memory so it can be used, but many older don't support either or supports one but not the other.

today I did a clean new install of RC2 and still didnt get the choice to install English Language on a German WIN 7 64 Bit
only after installing the language pack I had my English interface back

still something broken - why not make the installer like when you install the language pack - there you can choose
between the different translations - for me (I am German) I prefer the English Interface so it would be nice to be
able to switch from the options menue like in a office package - in the installer may be you can choose which
languages you want to install and from the options menue you can make a switch - this could be a feature for a
future release may be ??

Anyway NB 6 runs fine - Great work so far

Are you sure you re-downloaded it? The one on the site works exactly as you describe it should. Your browser may have cached the old one.
