Hmm that's interesting. Good to know.

Edit: I think those weird messages are just weird messages and it's still working properly. I'll check it out.

I'm seeing the same sequence of ERROR messages repeatedly when connecting to Easynews, but don't see them when connecting to Giganews.

File transfers complete, but the errors imply some sort of problem communicating with Easynews.

I just upgraded to v6, but wasn't seeing these errors with the previous version.

This happens on my end too using NB. My provider is Newshosting.com, using SSL on NB...getting crap like the following:

[13:28:52] ERROR Download Engine unlimited.newshosting.com - DL_SDM - Network Read Failure
[13:28:53] ERROR NNTPSocket - NS_Connect - news.newshosting.com-Error talking to Server:ˆUÕTZ‹LÕ-t; D¶š=JDS!Ö—ÚSüûÂZjÇõæV200 NNRP unlimited.newshosting.com Service Ready - support@newshosting.com (fed04.iad)
[13:28:54] ERROR Download Engine unlimited.newshosting.com - DL_SDM - Network Read Failure

[13:28:56] ERROR Download Engine unlimited.newshosting.com - DL_SDM - Network Read Failure
[13:28:57] ERROR NNTPSocket - NS_Connect - news.newshosting.com-Error talking to Server:§Õj3€fÔfÍ$öÑIw˜ÓÒf{6•¬·.¦×|É´¿9V-?¬˜Axò×)}c?¡>^p>—ª„þŒ200 NNRP unlimited.newshosting.com Service Ready - support@newshosting.com (fed01.iad)
[13:29:45] ERROR Download Engine unlimited.newshosting.com - DL_SDM - Network Read Failure
[13:29:46] ERROR NNTPSocket - NS_Connect - news.newshosting.com-Error talking to Server:^F¡PQaò¨³øb¡gÖù§fv¢ºfýB{Sn¼Ú/‡ Ty¶,ÁRdø.á('MÕžùaP“úÑø$t¿6\cöõF>,hÆ'e¡vˆ½ýñ¼HÌmQ'>8öHíLgãÙª¢0³-)T200 NNRP unlimited.newshosting.com Service Ready - support@newshosting.

It's actually very irritating as it happens a LOT, and the Critical Error Message window always sets it's focus to ontop of whatever you are working on, so it interupts me as I am typing (or whatever else I am doing) causing me to lose focus...then it does it like 10 times in 5 seconds lol and then I just want to throw something at the wall. Switching back to not using SSL.

Using 6.0 Build 1019 on this end.

Going to switch to the new 6.11 first and will respond if the problem persists.

viewtopic.php?f=11&t=29303&hilit=Avast

I wrote about this the other day. What surprises me is that Newshosting doesn't suggest this too. Certainly your problem might be different but, I've solved this problem for a number of people this way.

Edit: You can turn the popup window off. It's there mainly for the noobs who don't know about the logging tab.

That's a good theory but in my case, it only happens during SSL usage. So far with the newest release of Newsbin it hasn't happened yet however I don't know how long it was running as I came back to a crashed system (not caused by NB that I can see). I'll follow up with more info if I see it pop up with the latest release.

What virus scanner do you use? Several of them now intercept SSL and really F things up. They basically perform an "man in the middle" attack on SSL right there on your PC.

I have two, MSSE or whatever and Panda, but Panda is for manual scans only, it isn't set to actively monitor or block anything. Since switching the latest release (6.11) of NB, I have not seen it happen since.

MSSE? Security Essentials? I've never seen it get in the way of a download. Well, that's another thing then. I don't believe MSSE causes this. You can turn off the popup window if you want. It's in the confirmation options. How often does this happen?

Heh, it does not happen often (anymore). As I mentioned, since upgrading to the latest release of Newsbin 6 (6.11), the problem went away. So it wasn't an issue with any anti-virus or any other application butting in. Simply a bug in that previous release. It's been working great now.
