6.10 RC3 does not display posts

Postby RayMark » Sun Sep 11, 2011 2:28 pm

It might be related to the other post here about RC2 dislplay age limited, not sure.

I have RC2 downloaded but never tried it (yet?), moved from RC1 to RC3 directly.

With RC3, in a group posts view or whatever it is called, first I noticed that search results are wrongly empty, while with RC1 everything was ok.
Then I downloaded all headers for some groups - and "Show all posts" shows an empty window too with 0 results.

So I returned back to RC1 and everything is back to normal, the posts now are shown as they should be.
Never tried RC2, though. So not sure when the problems started, in RC2 or in RC3.

Anyway, I think I will wait for RC4

It's working for me so, you're going to have to dig a little deeper. Sounds like you're filtering them out.

It was my impression too.
But I was not able to find how I could be filtering them.
Display age "Show all files" rules out filtering by the date range.
Display settings - default (I assume - NONE). Anyway, even if old were hidden, for newly downloaded all headers probably all would be new.
Other filters not used.
Was something changed in the filtering implementation / default settings between RC1 and RC3?

BTW: after switching back to RC1 I see that the filters are blank - nothing written there.
Only mouse over shows "Filter Profile", "Age", "Min Size", "Max Size".
Otherwise - just blank gray boxes.
And they cannot be enabled.
If they were working before, probably something not backward compatible between RC3 and RC1 in the NBData folder, which in my case is exactly the same while NewsBin folder is different.

The key question then is why are you the only one reporting this?

- I'd move the posterlockout.txt and the filters.db3 out of the data folder, then start Newsbin and try again.

- I might use procmon to watch the data load.

- How long does the progress bar take to load?

- I might pick a smallish groups, purge and re-download.

I think you're going to find you have filter that wasn't applying before and is applying now.

Removed filters.db3, - did not help
The other file was not even there to begin with.

I now tried RC4:

An improvement - "Show All Posts" is working fine.
However, search in a loaded group tab is not working at all.
Possibly, the syntax was changed and I just do something wrong:

I copy to the clipboard a word from a subject line of some post (so that there is no typo - tried typing myself too).
Run search - 0 found.
Afterwards, I want at least to get all the posts again - I delete the search word and run search with an empty field - nothing - still 0.
The only way to get all the posts back - to reload them.

Switched back to RC1.
Loaded all the posts - ok.
Ran the search with the same word still in the clipboard - correctly found a number of posts.
Ran the search with the blank search field - all the posts appeared again.

So, either there still are bugs or the search syntax was changed between RC1 and RC3 (or RC2?), maybe I need to add some special characters to the keyword like *keyword* and to an empty search string too.

I'd exit, wipe "workspace.xml" and try again. You're literally the only person reporting this so, I really think it's local. When you clear the search word, are you hitting the "nuke' button?

I use search every day and am not noticing anything like this.

As an experiment, you might try loading up only 10 days worth and see if search works faster.

Without workspace.xml - exactly the same, no improvement.
Yes, I tried with less days too.

Maybe something got corrupted during multiple updates to newer beta versions.
Still, the problem probably is in NBData folder not in NewsBin folder.

BTW, I tried with various groups - some where older ones, used with previous beta versions, others - new ones, with all the headers downloaded for the first time.
Search is not working with them all, it seems.

Do you mean "not working with any of them" or "not working with all of them" (i.e., is it working in some?)

It seems that it was not working with any of the groups.

But the issue may no longer be actual: I tried using filters and search with RC5 and everything working fine, just like with R1.
With RC3-RC4 search was not working.

I tried so far with RC5 on one multi-group folder. At least with it, everything is working correctly.
