6.52 Beta 5 .nfo files

Hi,
Apparently beginning with Beta 5 .nfo files are no longer automatically downloaded. Is there a way to change this behavior back? I can't manually go into every file set and manually download the .nfo file associated with it, as the change notes state. If nothing else, then please add a configuration option not to do this ... .nfo files are important to get/keep with the files downloaded.

Thanks much, Chris.

I'll take a look. Not sure it ever intentionally downloaded them.

With v5 the .nfo files are now within the file download, along with the .par files. That's fine from a display perspective. However, .par files will get downloaded when needed (though a good percentage of the time hey are all downloaded, even though they're *not* needed), but with v5 the .nfo file never downloads, unless I expand the set and manually click on the file to force it. So, I'm not reporting a display problem, but the fact that either the .nfo should still automatically download, or if you're going to change behavior then please add an option to always force the download of it.

With v4 and previous the .nfo files were treated as separate files and as such were always downloaded.

"Has new compaction logic, auxiliary files, like .nfo and .srr, are now included in compacted lines to clean up the display. Click the + sign to expand the set and gain access to those files if you need them separately."

Thanks again, Chris.

I'm not against making it an option. I have not interest in downloading those extra files myself so, it would have to be an option.

I'm actually working on a feature for B6 which will actually show which compacted sets have these files but, let you read them by selecting the compacted set and Ctrl-R'ing them.

I'd just like to voice my support for keeping .nfo files and writing them to the extraction folder. Many people rely on these files to keep a record of what is being collected and having these associated files to remind them of what their files contain is imperative. Why not just put up instructions on how to add a global filter for the people that don't need them? To code them out seems a little rash.

Whilst I appreciate that you don't consider them vital and it is, after all, your own usenet application we're all using, please consider the opinions of the peons that have paid for the right to use it also.

You mis-read what I said. I know it's important to some of you.

I'm just saying it'll be optional because I don't want them. Not that I won't do it.

What I've noticed is different is that .nfo. .srr and .sfv files now appear in the 'bundle' with the rars and pars, instead of being their own seperate header line. I prefered it when they were displayed sepearately. Is there a switch for that, or is it a hard-coded change in behaviour?

Thanks,
thwartme

Hard coded. It's done that way so, Ctrl-R can pull them all in one go AND often identify the contents of obscured files.

Okay, well, if you're receiving votes, I vote for "change this back". I want to be able to see these files seperately, and I DON'T want them to download when I select the rar/par bundle. Useless crap , clogging up my HD.

Filename filter set in the "Global" filename reject Filter will remove them when downloaded. You might want to add a "Post unrar filter" too because if they're mentioned in the PAR files, they'll get generated from nothing.

[.]sfv
[.]nfo
[.]srr
....

But if I filter them out, I won't be able to see them in the header window, right?

No, that's why I said "Filename filters". Filename filter only apply during download.

Running 6.70 b7 using post unrar filter. They all work except for [.]nzb. I have also tried \.nzb still leaves the nzb file.

If the NZB isn't mentioned in the PAR, it's probably not going to get hit "Post UnRAR". If you want to filter NZB's out of your NZB's you might want to add an NZB Loading filter which can remove files before the make it into the post list. NZB Loading filter uses the subject filters.

A bit lost on this thread -- having upgraded to 6.81, is there a way to have the .nfo files preserved?

For the posts I'm looking at today, it is not a separate file, it's in the .rar. So it's getting deleted after the unrar. Even though I have the post-unrar filter option unchecked.

If not, then I vote as well for an option to preserve these files. Although really, we already appear to have an option for the folks that don't want them - namely the post unrar filter, so seems like keeping them should just be the default?

Many thanks, Q&D for a truly amazing piece of software.

Are you sure it's getting deleted or is it just left in the download folder? Without a post-unrar filter, Newsbin doesn't delete anything.

When you say "in the rar" you mean actually inside the RAR files or grouped with the rar files in a set of files?

Yes, I mean inside the rar. I just use one folder so pretty sure they're getting deleted. Oddly, the sfv's are not. Started happening right after upgrade to 6.81, I had been running an earlier version of 6.x. Didn't change any settings, and have gone through them and don't see anything that got mangled in the upgrade process.

I see now I've been misreading a bit, the thread was not about these files getting deleted but rather about them not getting downloaded in the first place. It just seemed like the most likely looking candidate for the problem I'm seeing.
