Version 6.60 Beta 13 Available...

Postby dexter » Mon May 04, 2015 9:45 am

We are releasing B13 a little earlier than planned to get an important fix out. Apparently the compaction changes introduced in B11 and B12 is corrupting headers for some posting styles. You'll want to update to B13 if you download from headers. We will shoot for having sorting in the Download List working for B14. This version also has more complete support for Sonarr.

Summary:

  • Fixed Compaction issue. Was putting too much together in some cases.
  • Sonarr Support: Implemented pause, resume, delete and clear for history and queue. Also hooked up use of API key.
  • Now cleans up and validates paths before writing them whensetting options.
  • Cleaned up unrar paths having path variables like $(GROUP) on failure.
  • Now makes sure the unrar path set in Remote NNZB always has a trailing slash.
  • Now makes sure an unrar path is always set with NZB fileanme trailer when using Sonarr
  • Improvements to Download Groups list
  • Fixed issue when all chunks fail, the main progress bar wasn't going red

NOTE: The Download List is incompatible with anything prior to 6.60! We recommend you finish any queued downloads before installing this beta. This applies to the Wish List and Failed Files list too.

The download link is on the Newsbin Beta Page

This doesn't have as much in it as I hoped but it looks like it finally solves and issue with compaction of header downloads.

It also has improved Sonarr support. If you play with Sonarr make sure the unrar path is unadorned. No $(NZBFILE) in it. Newsbin handles this automaticall.

I will upgrade and poke at this/Sonarr tonight. Haven't been d'ling headers lately so I wasn't affected by that.

Still having some performance issues

I'm auto downloading 500 + groups every 8 hours nb with over 5000 files after a while nb download speed slows down to an point nothing is retrieved anymore. Nb has a higher cpu utilization then when its downloading at the normal speed. Stopping and restarting nb is the only solution for me right now

Nb slows down to a point it show not a sign of respons anymore when switching tabs

having this issue now for some time and for sure in nb v11, 12 and 13

It looks like v10 doesn't have this problem

What's RAM usage look like when it starts to stall? I'm going to guess it's using a bunch of RAM.

1.9 Mb is probably impossible. 1.9 Gb is possible and is close to crashing level on 32 bit windows. On 64 bit windows it's just a decent amount of ram.

Quade:

I can also report that the header read issue is still present in B13 vs B9, it takes an extraordinarly long time to read the headers of multiple groups, while it's not as bad as ~B11 (when I last complained) it's still taking nearly 24x as long as in B9 for a similar header read (~10 seconds vs ~4 minutes).

Just verified by switching back to B9 and re-loading the same headers, 7 seconds vs several minutes in B13.

Just for grins. Sort on date making the newest files the top most. Then restart Newsbin and load that group again. See how quick the load is. It occurs to me that if you load with it sorted on "Status", that the first sort will be very slow.

Edit: Turns out I'm already handling this case. I don't let status sort persist.

Ahhhh, I don't sort on status, for the busy groups I sort based on size as generally the files I'm interested in will be in the top half this way and I'll see HD versions before LD versions. For the other groups, I'll do time, or name. I can reinstall B13 (I'm back on B9 since it works for my needs) and do a sort on time on the groups that trip my, oh lord this is slow, alarm if you'd like and time the difference but I'm gathering from your edit you don't need me to do that?

Sonarr still doing the same thing with the strangely named files. You probably already know but FYI. Otherwise it seems pretty good. My activity log in Sonarr seems to be clearing out on its own. Seemed to get a bit jammed up in B12.

And can now report that said slow read time is either ONLY true on older machines (above one was a quad core duo) or with people with a ton of headers on disk (not asking newsbin to read them mind you) as now that I've migrated to a new(er) computer and only have a days worth of headers on disk the groups load quick as heck with B13.... eventually I'll redownload all the headers and see if that impacts anything.

Still having this weird issue where the last PAR file I post is sometimes shown as incomplete, pull headers again it shows complete but the properties show last part missing, black bar when downloading! I pulled headers via Forte Agent through my ISP and the post is complete and I can download the PAR without issue, so NB is not happy about something?

Edit: I've installed 6.56, deleted the group I post to and downloaded all headers and now see genuine complete posts where before I was seeing erroneous complete posts! Have posted as normal and pulled headers with 6.56 and no issues so far! I'll wait for the 6.60 production release and test again!

There is definitely something gong on with RAM usage. With NB just sitting idle, RAM usage slowly creeps up towards the system max before windows starts shutting things down. Right now NB has been running for a bit over an hour and is calming 19GB and about 30% of the CPU. I can still click on most things in NB but nothing happens.

Just for info, I don't see a 'creeping' RAM issue...

Running B13, Windows 7 x64, 8GB RAM

Fresh start, NewsbinPro64.exe 33,888K
Added approx 14.5GB to download, NewsbinPro64.exe 194,484K, started downloading

Approx 1h 45m later, NewsbinPro64.exe 234,956K, still downloading (approx 8.6GB left), cache 132/200

Approx 3hr later, NewsbinPro64.exe 221,508K, still downloading (1GB left), cache 108/200

Completed downloading and has been idle for nearly 1hr, NewsbinPro64.exe 221,972K

Been idle for a further 1hr, NewsbinPro64.exe 221,928K

Closed and reopened, NewbinPro64.exe 33,660K

thanks

Ram use seems pretty steady to me.

With it sitting there using 200 megs of ram, open the "help/about" menu and see how much RAM it's using after you close that window. This clears the cache.

The cache uses RAM and doesn't return it till Newsbin is closed down. you have a cache size of 200. Depending on how large the posts are, 150 megs for the cache isn't unreasonable.

Thanks for the report.

I'm seeing the RAM issue. Never really paid attention to it until it was mentioned.

I leave Newsbin open for days on end because I use Sonarr. My cache is set to 1500. System was just using 12GB of RAM when I got home today. Did the Help/About, now I'm down to 8.3GB of RAM used. It is creeping for certain.

A couple of other issues I've seen.

#1 - Downloads don't appear in the download list at times. Most do. Some just seem to disappear and I have to hunt for them through my file system.

#2 - Just had a 10GB download. It didn't autopar. It had enough enough PAR's to fix but it just sat there. I manually told it to assemble incompletes and then it started autopar/unrar. Then it didn't appear in the download list either.

Your cache is worth at least 1.2 gigs of that ram use maybe more. There's nothing wrong with using a large cache but you're tell newsbin to use 800-1.2 megs of RAM per cache block. In fact from your results it looks like the cache was using 3.7 gigs. You might want to back the cache back down. Particularly if the download speed doesn't matter much like it probably doesn't using Sonarr.

It's not much of an issue for me with 16GB of RAM. But I did see my 'memory - private working' set up to 2.4GB. Currently it is 1.46GB w/o a restart.

I can back down the cache but I have seen Newsbin use more memory from this morning to when I came home from work today and it was idle all day.

Perhaps the cache has something to do with the RAM usage. I am set at 6000 with 30GB RAM available to the system. Even with help/about, NB just keeps taking more till windows kills it.

If you don't mind the RAM usage then there's nothing really wrong with a cache that large. You can clear it the same way "help/about". I have an action item to automatically clear it when the download list empties but I haven't done it yet.

How many search based watches do you have?

Duplicate file detected

Postby Kent_Diego » Sun May 17, 2015 11:44 pm

I have been getting a lot of incomplete headers from Astraweb lately. I download anyway but often too incomplete to get file. I will then run the downloaded .nzb and delete the download. The .nzb is good but the new download moves to failed files list due to "Duplicate detected" error. If you re-add to download list Bypassing Filters then I get the file just fine.

I feel this is a bug and am requesting that Newsbin Pro not add a file to the downloaded file list until the entire file is successfully downloaded.

It would be awesome if Newsbin was smart enough to automatically find missing pieces of incomplete files using the .nzb file.

Thanks,
Kent

Auto PAR of Incomplete files

Postby Kent_Diego » Sun May 17, 2015 11:51 pm

I have been getting a lot of incomplete headers lately where Newsbin is not able to successfully get file. But if i select the PAR files and select "Resume Download" then I can coax Newsbin to successfully assemble incomplete and obtain file.

I am requesting the Newsbin be more aggressive in trying to recover incomplete files.

Thanks,
Kent

Since I started using Beta 13 I have been seeing something odd. I get many posts that are white (not green) and is says "Old Post". These are new files with new age stamps. I have "Hide Old" filter enabled and still see them but if I search they do not show and they get removed from view afterwards.
Seems odd and I think these are good files that should not be flagged Old. I never remember seeing anything like this before.

Thanks,

Issues with 6.60b13 bld.4012
You may already know all this but I'm posting this just in case.
Clean install, W7 x64 - registry, old headers etc all cleaned before installing. Watch lists & filters all re-written.

NBP is generally faster. :)

RAM use - very similar to 6.5x for me - rounded down to nearest 000
    private working set - 370000k
    private bytes - 462000k
    working set - 392000k
(This is whilst working drawing my full bandwidth.)

'Download to Folder named for Subject' - previously a block select of various files (not multi-part packages) would put all selected in a single folder, now I get a mountain of individual folders & everything gets extracted. (I think you had said that you were prob. going to alter that back to the old handling method tho.)

Watch topics (for local headers) - some will not work any more. The search text no longer appears in the search field automatically, but sometimes it is applied & sometimes not. Manually entering the same string works.

Column widths - sometimes columns width & position doesn't 'stick' between tabs & restarts.

Find Field - in the download panel doesn't work.
Awesome FREE file manager - http://multicommander.com/

Watch topics (for local headers) - some will not work any more. The search text no longer appears in the search field automatically, but sometimes it is applied & sometimes not. Manually entering the same string works.

Not sure what this means. The question is whether they fill in with matching posts. if you download headers and the proper matches get into the watch topic, then it's working.

I meant some of my watch topics that previously worked (before the upgrade) no longer work.
The files are there listed in the header display but don't get picked up & displayed. I do not see why, as if I enter my search string manually they appear.

I since have found a possible reason - one says poster string is good but doesn't match when tested - this previously worked & I copied/pasted it from the properties dialog of a file. There must be some sort of character clash.

Other watches are working as they should. So I am a bit stumped... :?

EDIT
I just got it to return 57 of 334 results, i.e. watchlist gives 57, same search string in the group tab gives 334. Better than 0 but really confusing.

It's a regular expression so, you might need to escape some characters. You don't need all parts of the email address. Just enough to make a match

"robo.*cock"

for instance.

Here's a few more niggles -
I found the clock for time to finish d/ls is erratic now. It used to be pretty accurate but now might be 3x overestimated or more. Wondered if it was a fixed ratio but watching different queues download & checking time taken seems to show a variable error in reporting.

On Watchlists I have seen a few more 'new' behaviors. Sometimes after entering a new search string, the pane does not refresh as it used to. Similarly when clearing a string from the search field, the pane may remain empty if no results had been found.

On the D/L pane 'find' it no longer saves the previously entered strings after restart. Not that it works right now :P

Searching for a poster doesn't always work on headers, sometimes it will after a restart but then might fail after several different entries/searches. I've tried this when I can see the poster & just want to test the search function in the headers pane.

Could anything create an intermittent fault for DB access? As some of these issues could be explained by that.

Much of this has been addressed in B14. For example if you hit enter while using find in a watch it'll clear the existing records in that window because it thinks you're doing a new search.

Thanks Quade.
I hadn't been using <enter> but I did try clicking the search button.
I will wait for B14.
I think my current priority wish is for 'Download to Folder named for Subject' to revert to 6.5x behavior! :)

Watch lists don't need "enter". They search each time you enter a character.

Yeah I'd assumed that was the case. Just isn't happening all the time. My watchlists are a bit temperamental right now.
***
Noticed something else to bug you about today ;)
On start NBP is using 11-12% CPU (empty queue)
When leeching this rises to 13-14%
D/L'ing headers this goes to 23-24%

Reason I noticed was my fans got louder when the queue was empty - I found NBP was still using 12-13%. It stayed this way for as long as I left it & wouldn't close using the exit dialog, I used TM to force close.
This occurs both without & with headers loaded.
I restarted & had the same issues inc. after a reboot.
With further tests I found if I wait for 30+ seconds it can close without being forced. A long wait compared to 6.5x

I noticed that default had the same result/ticks as HiPower in settings/performance - wondered if that was correct.

Dunno if this will be of use - I did a copy of handles etc from Process Explorer - this is whilst NBP is running without any active tasks, I would normally expect almost no CPU use at this point. It is at 13%.

Sounds like it's importing headers. Do you see a number in parens down on the status bar near the "Cache" line?

Looks like you run a crapload of connections too.

Currently the number in brackets is 0 (under chunk cache use state) - so was that active local processing of headers because I have just leeched 10 days of headers to a fresh install...?

I have 2 different servers but am not using max connections, 33 of 50 possible. I didn't think that was huge considering.

Perhaps "pointless" is the point I'm making. It's kinda pointless to run that many connections. I get 120 Mbps with 20 connections and I don't even need that many to do it. You want to run as few connections as gives you max speed for your line, any more than that just churns, uses ram and might even slow the download.

You have weird issues. What with all your databases getting corrupted at once (or so it seems). I'm wondering how many of your issues are related to what looks like problems writing to your disks.

That does raise the question of why server farms offer lots of connections. (Giganews @ 50 on their premium service) But I take your point as you know more about the guts of this system than I do.
Historically using more connections helped my line speed. The nearest tel. exchange is not that great, which I believed might be a problem.

I have started to wonder about disk access as well.
The NBP DB is on an SSD, - tests say all good on that hardware (assuming the tests are good of course) & it has <50% free space.
So I am now wondering about the AV etc, which was upgraded about a week or so ago. That is the only 'system-wide' change since these issues began. I know it is more controlling/invasive than the old version, so maybe I haven't added enough to the 'exclusions' settings.

UPDATE
I added the whole data folder
C:\Users\...\AppData\Local\Newsbin
to exclusions.
My avg CPU use is very different now.
Previous session <16%
Current session <3%

I assume that the AV system was sand-boxing activity in that dir despite NBP being fully whitelisted.

Thanks for taking a look at this Quade, you gave me some ideas ;)

Marketing. People don't understand connections but assume "more is better".

AV is the source of most strange issues. For it to work, it has to tie itself deeply into the guts of Windows.
