performance for unrar to network drive

Postby etmriwi » Tue Mar 08, 2016 5:56 pm

Hello,
Since about nb662 I notice the performance of unrar by newsbin towards my network drive is a lot slower. It used to be about 100MB/sec and now it is around 25-30MB/sec.
I have seen this with nb662, I tried uninstalling and installing nb661 but it is the same. Now with 670b6 the performance is still the same, around 25-30MB/sec. I measure network throuhghput with iTraffic Monitor but any tool will show the same.

I've installed newsbin on C drive (crucial SSD 256GB). The data dir is E (Crucial 480GB SSD) and I unpack over gbit network to my atom powered server which has jbod over 2 SSD's (256GB + 500GB Crucial) with ext4. CPU is i7-2600 with 8GB ram and windows 7 pro. I also have a linux based NAS PC with ZFS over 10 disk pools with i3 CPU + 24GB ram. When I choose that PC as destination the unrar speed is about 60MB/sec. That used to be 110MB/sec easily before.
When I let newsbin unpack to my local E drive it goes pretty fast (15 seconds for a 2GB file). When I unpack to the network it is quite slow (minutes for the same file). I download with 200Mbit cable + 20Mbit ADSL combined using 5 news servers. It reaches 27MB/sec maximum so now my download is faster then the upload to the server.

When I unpack locally and copy the file to the atom server is goes up with 112MB/sec. So to me it looks the receiving end or the network is not the bottleneck.

I noticed when I reverted back to nb661 that the title bar still showed the 6.62 version number. I am wandering whether my attempt to downgrade was succesful. Did the installer just download the newsbin 6.62 files?

I would like to see the same unrar performance I previously had with 6.61.
Any hints? tips? Did something change drastically in the unrar engine?

How fast is it if you just use WinRAR?

It is also not as fast as it used to be. Perhaps also the people doing the rarring are using heavier compression algorithms.
Although you can see winrar manages 52MB/sec while newsbin does 18-22MB/sec in this case

Newsbin 6.70b6 :

Winrar 5.0 (also tried the latest 5.31)

Blue is download, red is upload.

Both with the same download of about 1.8GB comprised of 12 rar files of 157MB each.
This is a plain copy of the same file to the server :

I reverted back to newsbin 6.55 and then it is at normal speed again :

I will stick with 6.55 for now. see how it goes.

The big difference in the RAR library is support for RAR5. I don't know if that slowed down regular unrar. I'm just using the WinRAR library from RAR Labs.

I have now downloaded a few other files with 6.55 and the speed of the unpacking varies quite a bit. Some files unpack with max 50MB/sec and others with 80MB/sec. So it is also related to the way it was packed.
And like I said unpacking towards a faster server is faster and towards a local SSD is much faster. So also my low power Atom CPU powered server is partly to blame.
This Atom sever is also my router. The single gbit cable has vlan seperation for the connection to internet and the local lan. I will have another look at the network setup too.

If the 6.55 version does not support winrar5 yet then I will have to upgrade again anyway.

Thanks
