NBP not letting my other apps get any download bandwidth.

Postby Streetwolf » Tue Mar 22, 2016 8:22 am

Hi everyone.

I'm still having a problem that goes back many versions of NBP. When NBP is downloading it is sucking up my entire download bandwidth which results in my other internet apps not getting any bandwidth while NBP is downloading. In web browsers servers can't be connected too. My mail app which sits in my tray loses connection.

When things were working fine at some point in the past, NBP would still use all my bandwidth but it never interfered with any of my other applications. Is there an option somewhere that will let my other apps grab bandwidth while NBP is downloading?

I'm on 6.7 beta 8. I think the problem started with the first incarnation of 6.6 but it might have been even earlier.

How many connections to the server? The more connections you use, the more it'll tend to swamp network sharing. Most people use too many connections.

Only using 5 connections to NewsHosting. When I didn't have this problem, way back when, I could use 30 connections with no affect to my other internet apps. Also using SSL if that makes any difference.

*****
Dropped the connections to 4. I am getting a little less than my max bandwidth which allowed me to at least browse the Internet. As stated, I could run with 30 and it wouldn't affect anything else in the past.

Yeah 5 connections isn't much. What's your speed to the internet?

According to speedtest.net 116.5/37.5. Of course this is data bytes. Raw speed is about 123 mbps down.

Jesus, you have something very wrong going on then. I have 100 Mbps down like you, download using 20-40 connections at 120 Mbps and barely notice it while browsing. I thought you were on come slow connections. What security software do you use?

First of all I'm on Windows 10 x64 with TH2 and all updates. I use Windows Defender, MalwareBytes Anti-Malware, and MalwareBytes Anti-Exploit. Keep in mind it isn't just not browsers being affected, but things as innocuous as updating software via the internet. Going from 5 to 4 connections gives me a raw download speed of around 116 vs. 123 which is enough room to have web pages appear albeit somewhat slower.

Are you on Windows 10 by chance? I don't really know the timeline when NBP started behaving like this. I also don't use any QOS stuff in my router, never did.
I'm also on Ethernet.

****** Update
Just ran Speedtest.net and while it was running I switched to another tab and had the same problem trying to load pages. So maybe it's not NBP at all. If not then what do you think it is? Ethernet Adapter settings, Router settings, TCP/IP settings? Is there a mechanism that will reduce bandwidth so others internet apps can run with no slowdowns?

I'd remove all security software except the built in windows stuff. Reboot and retry your testing. I think something is intercepting all of your traffic internally and this something isn't able to keep up with bulk downloading and web browsing.

If that fixes it, I'd figure out how to make your security software ignore Newsbin's connections to the news server. There aren't many programs that download in bulk like Newsbin and this wouldn't be the first time security software couldn't keep up because it wasn't designed for it.

Lots of people are running it in Win10. It's unlikely to be a windows problems.

I disabled all my non-MS startup programs, services and drivers. I even turned off Windows firewall. Also disabled Windows Defender. Still have the problem when a program is using all my available bandwidth.

The only thing left might be my router. As I mentioned already I don't use any QOS stuff. Are you using QOS in your router Quade? I think I'll try some tests under a VM with a basically a vanilla Windows 10.

Yeah. I don't use anything like that. I've made no changes to accommodate Newsbin.

I wonder if you're barking up the wrong tree here? What kinda CPU load is Newsbin showing when it's running? On my machine, at 100 Mbps it's about 4-6%. Do you use NZB Autoload?

CPU utilization is in the range of 3-4%. I do not use NZB Autoload.

I just bypassed my router and connected directly to my cable modem. I was able to get to other sites with NZP downloading a 2 GB file at full download speed. So if it is my router what do I look for that might correct this problem? Maybe just a reset will do it.

I did a hard reset on my router and now things are working OK. The only problem I have is that I can't get into the browser via http://192.168.1.1/ the connection times out. Do you have an idea how I can get to my modem again? I have an Asus RT-16N. I notice the lights on the router are blinking way to much. The LAN and wireless lights. It never behaved this way before.

I'd probably unplug it from the internet. Then try again.

Hard reset might mean it's changed the default IP addresses so it's no longer 192.168.

In a command (dos) prompt I'd try "ipconfig". If should list your current address. See if it's still 192.168.1.X

The reset got me into this problem in the first place. Did quite a few. I was able to get into the router screens by manually setting my IP to 192.168.1.2, and and then I could reach the router at 192.168.1.1. Of course I can't reach other sites this way.

Here's what IPCONFIG says. Is the IPv4 address supposed to be 192.168.1.x? If so how can I fix this?

Ethernet adapter Ethernet:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
Link-local IPv6 Address . . . . . : fe80::4098:8297:6334:a058%10
IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 69.112.180.243
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.254.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 69.112.180.1

Looks like your DHCP isn't working. I'd unplug the ethernet cable for 20 seconds then plug it back in.

Didn't work. I can get to any site just not to 198.168.1.1.

So embarrassed  . When I moved the Ethernet cable from my modem directly to my PC to test I inadvertently plugged it back into a LAN port instead of the WAN port when done testing. No wonder I wasn't getting the downloading problem, I wasn't going through the router. Cables are now plugged into the correct ports and with all the resets I did downloading with a full pipe doesn't affect my other internet apps. The problem had nothing to do with NBP. Thanks Quade for the time you gave me in trying to solved my 'problem'. The only thing you didn't account for was my stupidity.
