Version 6.80 Beta 8 Available...

Postby dexter » Fri Sep 15, 2017 1:02 am

Beta 8 has a bunch more fixes.

  • Fixed Database Compaction function
  • Made change to handle when Windows fails to report available disk space. Does not pop up an error unless real data gets returned.
  • Fixed issue with files not getting fed to the files list if AutoPAR was disabled.
  • Fixed issue clearing the download list of small files after they download.
  • Added support for some new posting formats to better combine posts in a set.
  • New logic to automatically filter out headers with posting styles that Newsbin cannot make use of. These files can only be downloaded if you have an NZB file created by the original poster.
  • Fixed issue using recycle bin. Does not support long paths. Any paths > 260 characters will get deleted and not recycled.
  • Fixed selection sort capability
  • Fixed issue when posting a file, the task was hanging in the download list even though it did get posted.
  • Made change to posting function to give up after failing instead of trying forever. Was an issue when posting to a server that does not allow posting.
  • Fixed issue with slow removal of single part files from the download list.
  • Fixed issue where thumbnails weren't working if Image DB is active.
  • Fix that hopefully will reduce number of times the "No Data Available" text will display in fields while trying to extract data from the Database
  • Fixed Help button in Options menu. Was using jibberish URL
Download from the Newsbin Beta Page.

You're gaining on it. The pars/wishlist works and the files list works, but now the completed downloads aren't deleted from the downloads list.

When NB builds a file from .RAR's and puts the result in the files list, there is nothing in the Subject column. This is a serious problem as the file name may be some short name unrelated to the subject title. Changing the NB options to put the subject in the file name is not a good solution as some subjects are very long and would make it difficult to see duplicates or related files. I will be returning to Beta 6, until this problem is addressed.

Thanks.

I'll check it, thanks. I typically don't look at the subject but I can imagine how you might want to.

You're saying, with autopar disabled, they files aren't clearing the download list? I guess with autopar disabled, I could move the completion check back to the assembler thread.

I never test with autopar disabled so your comments are pretty much the only way I know what it's doing.

1 - You might want to look in the NBI file and make sure it's the right one.

2 - Before you start Newsbin too many times, you might want to use the NBI restore function in the options menu to grab and save a copy of the old NBI.

Had a user the other day report that an install acted like a new install. In his case, he'd actually re-installed windows in between so it wasn't surprising the upgrade didn't take. In your case, I'm not sure but it's important to backup a copy of the best NBI file in case yours got over-written during the install.

@Quade: thx for the fast reply - after one start via doubleclick on the nbi file (which was still good because I broke off the earlier install after being prompted for a trial key) it worked and I could install B8 as a upgrade - I will test it in the next few days on my new 400 Mbit Cable TV Internet connection

Doesn't seem to work properly wiith Sonarr. Sonarr downloads the NZB but it then seems to not communicate with Newsbin and doesn't show up in activity and it just downloads as if I'd manually downloaded the NZB into Newbin.

So Newsbin downloads the NZB but Sonarr then doesn't notice the file and pick it up?

Correct although Sonarr does download the NZB and sends it to Newsbin. After that it doesn't work like it should so have had to back to beta 7.

If you see anything in the Sonarr logging, it might be helpful.

Now it's doing the same in beta 7. Somehow upgrading to beta 8 has caused the same thing to happen.

Downloads to a Sonarr unrar folder and stays there. After that it always goes to whatever folder it belongs to but it's not.

Also when it's downloading it used to show up in the Sonarr queue and now it's not.

Not sure if this is the proper place to post this however, the throttling seems to be off. I set my throttle at around 100Mbps and it is downloading at around 40 Mbps.
The previous release I did not have this problem. It worked flawlessly.

Thank you.

And keep up the great work on this software! Love it!

I went back to Beta 6 and it is working fine with Sonarr again. So it's something in Beta's 7 and 8 that stops it working fully with Sonarr. No idea what.

Right. If I expand a file and put its individual parts into the download list, they will clear. But if I put a multi-part file in the download list without expanding it, it stays there even after all its parts are downloaded, even after I've manually unrared and deleted them, and even after I close and restart Newsbin, at which time it tries to start downloading them again. I can delete them manually, though.

I found a switch I didn't notice before in the Autopar Options, "Remove repaired but not unrared sets in the download list," but checking it didn't help.

My old issue of sticking gz files in the import folder has returned in beta 8. That means forcible closure of newsbin as it remains paused trying to exit. I believe the one group that mainly sticks is full of spam postings (over 300,000) per day.

Returning to beta 7, all groups get fully downloaded headers and there is no issue. The gz files get cleared out as they are suppose to. This happened yesterday so I let it ride to see if it would occur again. Repeated same issue today under beta 8 with same sticking gz files, installed beta 7 they all processed again and then cleared out so it is very consistent for me.

Beta 7 works perfectly, not 8.

You could use procmom to see if it's still processing the file. If it's still moving data around the GZ then it's not actually hung, just slower.

It just sits there, cache 200/200(1). Waited it out for like 20 minutes doing other stuff. Forcibly shut down newsbin at that point, without opening any groups, install beta 7 and the cache goes to 200/200(0) in a few seconds and then all the gz files are cleared.

Keeping on beta 7 for now till next beta.

Sort Problems:

Sort by status still misses some items. Not all poster filtered or subject reject items sort together. Neither do all the idle/new items stay together. Also, some of the subject reject items do not have the red dot on the left.

Sort by descriptions in the downloading files tab does not sort properly

Not sure. It's on my list to look at it. If I had to guess, I'd guess there's something it doesn't like about the pathing to the unrared file.

I was hoping some Sonarr logs would reveal what it doesn't like.

I am seeing NB 6.80b8 4972 hang on any attempts to exit, even when left for 1hr+ in the background.
I have also lost the ability to see headers d/l'd since it's install.
It goes thru the process of header downloads & the .db's are updated (as far as a timestamp goes) in the data folder but I cannot get more than 0 headers to display if I don't select an age range that pre-dates install.
maybe I should erase the data folders & start again?
UPDATE
-- deleting the old db3s seems to have sorted it displaying headers.

New logic to automatically filter out headers with posting styles that Newsbin cannot make use of. These files can only be downloaded if you have an NZB file created by the original poster.

Can this logic be switched off by the user? And what and when exactly is filtered out ? Can I get all the headers if I wish so, or this "censorship" cannot be avoided?
By "what and when" I mean: are some headers not downloaded - or - are all headers downloaded but some are later removed - or - I still have all the headers but some are not shown?

Because I see two problems with this:

1. This logic probably cannot be 100% correct and something useful may inadvertently be filtered out.

2. "Newsbin cannot make use of" actually means AutoPAR/Unrar cannot make use of, but Newsbin can download them fine if I am willing to extract the post myself.

I just made an experiment, using only your own internet search with such a posting style - if you mean the style when each posted file (rar part) has a different meaningless (md5?) name and posted not necessarily to the same group, and the poster itself may or may not be different garbage each time.
I downloaded a par2 file (which was un-scrambled by your search engine), and then downloaded some garbage files of suitable size next in date/time to that par2 file, such as:

104b3068d642a92fc2b1a8d5.3ed13
264dd5196dd468dc79382c.254af
8f90093e9676fbb0172e3288aaa2.38b

As they contained 50 MB10 size rar parts, I was looking for approximately 52.4 MB posted files.
Almost at once I got 6 rar parts out of 40, and with the help of the par2 file they were renamed. I was able to extract the tv episode partially and watch it because I got the 1st part, and even the last part even though it was smaller and more difficult to guess.
I think I got only 6 parts because those rar parts were posted to different groups and probably not all of them are indexed by your search engine. Or perhaps the search just did not return all the parts because it works in mysterious ways.
Or I spent not enough time searching for them.
Anyway, in this experiment, at least the poster remained the same. It would be more difficult with different scrambled poster each time. But the main problem is the number of groups that have to be covered (headers downloaded).

Still, it would be reassuring to know that I can switch that filtering off. That the user is in control what headers to download.

Quade and I had this discussion and I had the exact same argument as you. The exact headers we are filtering are very specific and posted by one posting group. They do not follow Usenet standards for multipart files and there is no way Newsbin can combine them into sets. In fact just downloading the headers can bring Newsbin to it's knees while it is trying to make sense of them. This is what happened in January when this posting group started flooding Usenet with this format. So unless this posting group is willing to share their secret algorithm with us that will enable Newsbin to make sense of the posts, it creates a better user experience by blocking these style headers internally.

The posting style you use in your example is not being blocked and we are researching a way to handle them better.

Interesting.

You say - posting group.
I am interested which servers carry usenet group a.b.newznzb.alpha.
Your search engine does not suppurt it either, it seems.

If anyone finds new groups that carry meaningful content, we will add them to the list of groups we index. I added 4 groups recently due to research from one of our users. We knew that some files were getting split up among many different groups, some of which we were not indexing, and he helped us identify them.
