Can Newsbin Header Update Files be modified?

Postby Moondawgie » Tue Oct 17, 2017 12:14 pm

For the purpose of determining what entries in a Newsbin Header Update File (.gz) might be choking Newsbin, can the .gz files in Newsbin's Import folder be inflated using WinRAR, the resulting file broken into several smaller files, then deflated into several new .gz files that can then be placed in Newsbin's Import folder for processing in the usual manner?

For example, inflating a header file titled 'alt.binaries.hdtv-Astraweb-008681171558-008682171558.gz' produces a file titled 'alt.binaries.hdtv-Astraweb-008681171558-008682171558'.

Opening the resulting file in Notepad++ reveals the first ten lines in the file as being:

Code: Select all
Group: alt.binaries.hdtv

If I save those ten lines to a file titled 'alt.binaries.hdtv-Astraweb-008681171558-008681171565' and use WinRAR to deflate that file to a .gz file titled 'alt.binaries.hdtv-Astraweb-008681171558-8681171565.gz', can that file then be added to Newsbin's Import folder and it's contents imported into Newsbin's alt.binaries.hdtv spool file without causing problems?

It works with a backup copy of my instalation. But I want to know if I've created any problems with that installation by using edited .gz files.

Thanks.

No reason it won't work. Go for it. When you chop it up, you will need to maintain the top two lines in every chunk.

If the extension is ".txt" instead of GZ, it'll read it as a txt file so, you don't have to re-compress.

An interesting experiment might be to decode it with Winrar, change the extension of the decompressed file to ".txt" and see if you still get a hang.

I find it interesting that you seem to have a GZ issues but you also have corrupt DB issues. I wonder if the two are related?

I wonder the same thing, and am working on narrowing down the possibilities as best I can.

Thank you for your answers, explanations, suggestions, and patience.
