6.80B10 - problems

Postby dane » Thu Oct 26, 2017 10:23 am

Good morning

Just updated to 6.80b10 which displayed 2 problems apparently reaching your servers:
1) when first loaded, the message of the day window displayed this error: "This page can't be displayed"

2) When doing a search on the search tab, the progress bar at the bottom of the screen goes on forever but returns no results.

This is so even though I can use b10 to download files.

Both symptoms suggest your firewall is blocking Newsbin off the internet.

Thanks for the response.

Don't know how to replicate the problem with MOTD, but I retreated to 6.80B9 and search works fine. In both B9 and B10 I can use NB to download files from my newserver, so I'm seeing the internet, but in B10 I can't seem to reach the NB search server.

Odd issue...

When using click-drag to highlight posts the cursor is instantly moved to the bottom right corner of the screen. Only occurs if there is a left/right scroll bar on the bottom of the window due to column width and if there is room to scroll to the right.

Edit: Occurs in the group and download panes too if there is a scroll bar at the bottom.

Had another user with this but couldn't get him to troubleshoot it, he just went back to B9. The idea of beta releases is to help us track down any bugs. Only a handful of people have reported this one so we have to assume there is something you all have in common. What antivirus, firewall, or Internet Security software are you running? We usually suggest you temporarily disable any security software, reboot your machine, and see if the problem goes away. The upgrade can look like a different program to security software so sometimes it gets blocked. It is odd that you seem to be able to download, it looks like only traffic on port 443 is getting blocked.

I am unable to recreate this. What OS are you running? Are you doing something non-standard like running under Wine or in a VM or something?

I too am having a problem getting the MOTD with B10.
Running Win 7 32bit with AVAST and Windows built in firewall.
I got the properties for the error message:

res://ieframe.dll/dnserrordiagoff_webOC.htm#http:///

This would suggest that either IE doesn't like the URL being passed to it or it is actually getting "http:///" passed to it by Newsbin.

I also tried this on a machine running Vista 32 bit, Windows Defender (no real time scanning), and Windows Firewall. Same result.

Do all the machines have Avast installed? Motd is working here under Win10. I'm not at the most current patch level in Win10 though.

No only the Win7 machine has Avast. The Vista machine has only Windows Defender.

For me, at least, all other http traffic works fine. Newsbin nntp traffic works fine including XFeatures.

Dex and I are puzzled by this. What would block standard HTTPS connections between Newsbin and search and Newsbin and the motd server which are actually different domains They don't have the same address not do they use the same download code. One uses IE and the other uses a direction connection.

Why only 4 people?

We have two of these 4 running 32 bit systems. If you are having these issues, please chime in and let us know if you are running 32 bit or 64 bit.

mjpierce
, are both your systems 32 bit? You mentioned one was.
dane, are you running 32 bit?

We're pretty much troubleshot this down to a 32 bit issue. I changed how I built 32 bits and it seems to be working now.

I have the same problem. If I drag select with the left mouse button directly on the text of a list, everything works normally. However if I RMB and try to lasso-drag starting in the open space, the cursor jumps to the far right, bottom corner. I have a multimonitor system (nvidia GPU, not set to Surround mode) and whatever monitor Newsbin is on, the mouse jumps to the bottom right corner of the furthest right monitor.

This did not happen before recently and happens with b9, b10, and b11 (which I have been trying to track down another bug with you guys on another thread). I suspect that this is related to a change at the OS/libraries level with the Fall Creators Update, but only because of the the timing of that update and this problem. This is Win 10 x64. My monitor layout is 3 1 (primary) 2.

Do any of these factors match your experience, vspazv? Are you running on more than one monitor, for example?

Note: I have tested this same behavior (identical config file and data dir) on a different single monitor system with the same OS (win10 x64 FCU, nvidia card) and the bug did NOT occur. I hope that gets us closer to a solution to this one bug.

There's two different mechanisms for drag select. When you drag select directly on the text, that's Newsbin doing it by monitoring the mouse position. When you drag select out where there's no text, that Windows built in drag select which I don't control.

So at this point I'm not sure what's going on.
