Connections stopped...

Postby mesadude » Wed Aug 26, 2020 10:58 pm

Was cruising along in NB as usual, and noticed when I hit the Download all latest headers, nothing happens. Shut it down, rebooted the computer, and tried again. Nothing. I didn't change any settings. and connectivity for everything else is working.
Took an older backup of the Newsbin.nbi and started Newsbin with that. Still no connection to the outside world. I use two servers, Usenetserver and Astraweb. Neither seems to be working.
Sample of the Error messages in the last logfile.txt below. Any clue why it stopped connecting? Server data looks good as far as settings go.
Thanks,
Mesa

Brought up the "server" view and noticed all server connections are "disconnected". But I have the "Enable server" box checked. Not sure what the heck is up.

I'd say a database got corrupted or Newsbin isn't able to access its databases for some reason. Did anything change with your system right before this started happening? For example did some Internet Security software get updated? Or did your PC lose power while Newsbin was running? The two troubleshooting steps would be to 1) Temporarily disable any security software, reboot your machine, and see if the problem persists and 2) Close Newsbin and move or rename the DownloadsV2.db3* files and then start Newsbin and try again.

Great. Thanks. I’ll check for that when I’m back on the system.

The beta reports this on startup. I've already fixed it. It's just a spurious error. If you see it while trying to load a group up then as Dex suggests, it's probably a corrupt database.

Hi. I've deleted the active downloadsV2.db3's. It started to download then stopped. Again. Not sure what's up.
There are now 4 of those db3's.
Downloads.db3
Downloads.db3-wal
Downloads.db3-shm
DownloadMarker.DB3

Groups queue up to download then just show "size 0/0" and "downloading"

Well. Usenetserver is giving me a 502 rejection. So I've written to their support. I disabled it and now Astraweb is downloading.

For some reason my credentials via Usenetserver are being rejected. I can login to their website, but their server is rejecting my login attempts from Newsbin. And I'm using the same credentials; even copied and pasted and still am getting rejected. Astraweb is working. But no Usenetserver.
I've sent them the info, error codes etc.
Does that make any sense that I can login to their site and my account(s), but not their news server using the same Username and Password?

Server: news.usenetserver.com
Port: 563
Connections: 10
SSL: ON
VPN: none
Newsreader: Newsbin Pro 6.90B1 - Build 5200
Error message: [09/02 20:42:36] ERROR Downloader: Command Exception NNTP Perform Auth - NEWS SERVER ERROR: Usenetserver-The server rejected your login - contact your news service's support department. It's not a Problem with Newsbin : 502 authentication failed Usenetserver

Thanks again for any help.

When you log in to the UsenetServer Control Panel does it say your "Account Status" is active? If your credit card expired and they couldn't bill you for the next month of service then the symptoms you described will happen. If that's not it, and since you verified your login information is correct, the next step would be to contact UsenetServer and find out what's up. Make sure you tell them what troubleshooting steps you took and that you copy and pasted the same username and password you use to login to their website into Newsbin.

Hi Dexter. Yes. I have 2 Usenetserver accounts. I can log in to my member webpages and both are active and paid for.

I'm noticing on the Newbin server tab, that when I enter one of the Usenetserver passwords, the asterisks hiding one of the password is 7. The actual password I type is 9 characters. And I can find no way to view my server passwords in Newsbin once I close and reopen the tab.

This is the error message I'm still getting:
[09/04 15:50:29] ERROR Downloader: Command Exception NNTP Perform Auth - NEWS SERVER ERROR: Usenetserver-The server rejected your login - contact your news service's support department. It's not a Problem with Newsbin : 502 authentication failed Usenetserver

The length of the stars is arbitrary once you open and close the server options. There's no way to get the password back out once you've typed it in. Instead you can just cut and paste it back into place to replace whatever password was set.

I'm not clear to both accounts fail or does just one account fail? I wonder if there's something specific about one password that makes it not work.

Finally figured out my Usenetserver connection problem!

On the Newsbin Server Password field, I cannot see the passwords. Only asterisks after I close the window.

I had noticed that the number of asterisks didn't match the count of the characters in the password. One character I was using twice in the password would not stick. In other words, Newsbin's password field doesn't like the character so it dropped off. I reset a password which was all letters for a change, and now I can log in. For your info the banished character was an exclamation point.

Thank you for your help, and your patience!

That's a good observation. I'm not sure why it would happen. It's not a special character or anything. I'll check it out. Thanks.

This exact issue is happening to me.

I changed my password with newshosting by simply adding a ! to the end and then newsbin. I wasn't able to connect so I changed the password back on newshosting control panel without the ! but newsbin is still showing login errors. Newsbin support told me my ip address isnt banned and is looking further into it but logs show the login is being rejected. The password originally and now is 9 letters (all lowercase, no numbers or special characters).

ERROR Downloader: Command Exception NNTP Perform Auth - NEWS SERVER ERROR: Newshosting-The server rejected your login - contact your news service's support department. It's not a Problem with Newsbin : 502 authentication failed Newshosting

Here is the weird part, I went over to my friends place and they have a slightly older version of newsbin and these login credentials work fine, so I think this is a client issue. Can I roll back this install or reinstall and keep my settings?

*EDIT* I just used a completely different password and it worked.

I've already fixed this I believe. It'll be in the next beta.
