Cannot authenticate

Postby bruce73 » Wed Nov 23, 2011 9:28 pm

I know when this gets sorted, I'm gonna feel like an idiot, but, for the life of me, I can't connect to my desktop. Just installed the iOS version and installed the latest build of Newsbin (6.20 RC2). I enabled the Remote Control function in Options, created a password, save the INI file (as well as closed/re-opened the program). I've entered my serial number several times (with and without the dashes) and well as my password in the iPhone app, and I still get the Authenication Required error. Then in NewsPro this in the log: [16:17:57] ERROR Socket - Error: WSASend Socket Error Code: 10038 An operation was attempted on something that is not a socket.

This is driving me nuts. I'm running Win 7/64 with Windows Firewall (Newsbin Pro 64 is allowed under a home network). What am I doing wrong?

Someone reported that the password needs to be under 7 chars. I haven't had a chance to look at it yet. The socket error just means NBRemote dropped the connection. The key has be exactly like it's written, with the dashes.

Thanks for the suggestion, Quade, but still doesn't work. I'm entering the serial exactly as written; so far I've tried a pw with 4 numbers, 4 number + 2 letters, 5 letters. Nothing works. Same authentication error.

Have you made sure that the port required is set in your firewall to allow inward connections to Newsbin? Having said that, I would expect a different error if you have not as you should fail to connect rather than fail to authenticate.

Perhaps a simple logging facility should be added to NBRemote so that one can easily see the recent messages sent/received to help with debugging this sort of issue?

I found when I first started using this that when I typed the serial number it did not work but when I copy and pasted it it did. But then I am a lousy typer.

No, did the copy/paste as well and that didn't work. As for ports, the app has seemingly found my desktop if the error is in authentication, so I don't see the port as being in issue. Windows firewall shows all ports open for all users for both UDP and TCP for newsbinpro64.exe.

You need to simplify things. Set the password to "1"(one) on both ends. Set the key, make sure it's the key you see in "Help/Register Update Key". Then restart both ends.

Re: Cannot authenticate

Postby bruce73 » Thu Nov 24, 2011 11:34 am

This is getting very frustrating. Using "1" as you suggest, Quade, worked the first time. I tried it again (closing/re-opening everything), and got the Autentication error again.

However, I just installed the regular version of NB (6.11, 64-bit) on my HTPC, used a 6-letter pw, and it works. Could it be something up with the Beta? Can I run the 6.11 installer over the Beta without losing anything?

EDIT: Here's another new wrinkle -- now when I change the pw in NB (Beta) and click "OK," instead of the Option dialog just closing, NB shuts down. Looking at the NBI, it appears the new password isn't saved.

EDIT 2: OK, finally got it work on both computers, but only after uninstalling the Remote app and directly editing the NBI file [Remote] section. But you might find this useful: after I enter the serial/pw and press "Test Connection," the app hangs. Logging on NB shows "WorkerThread Died." When I back out of the setup window on the Remote and then try to connect to the computer, it connects. This happened on both the Beta and the regular install. FWIW.

First of all - Thanks for rating the app in the App Store (even though you only gave it one star).

I think I have found a bug in the app, that is affecting the Test Connection button. It looks like the newly entered password isn't updated correctly prior to doing the connections test. Exiting the settings and instead trying to do a normal connect does work however.

Exactly, that's what I discovered (and how I got it to work eventually).

True, I only gave the app one star, but, with all due respect Jonny, let's face it, I couldn't get it to work. I also thought that might get your attention. Seriously, though, I'm a fair guy and I've been anxiously waiting for NBRemote for iOS and am glad to have it, so I will definitely amend my review, never fear. :D (Or, if you can hold publication, I'll write a new one.)

Hi,

I got the same problem.
Now I'm at the point that Newsbin says "WorkerThread Died".
But I still can't connect the NBRemote app hangs up.
I also edited the NBI file because Newsbin closed after I clicked OK in the remote setup!
But what should I write in the NBI file in the password section only a 1?

Doing NZB's? Need to run 6.11 or wait till RC3 is up which should be soon. Like today. It's a bug in RC2.

I thought Newsbin 6.11 is a solution for my problem that I couldn't connect to Newsbin via the NBRemote app, but remote connection doesn't exist in Version 6.11.

Newsbin works fine, my only problem is the NBRemote connection!

Newsbin 6.11 does have the remote interface. I don't know why you think it hasn't? NBRemote is basically written for 6.11.

If you don't see it in the options, It suggests you're not running 6.11

The second from bottom in the list that currently says "Translation" is the one you want. It looks like there is a translation outstanding for the name of that option as when using English it reads "Remote Control".

OK THX, but it still doesn't work when I tried it with a 4 letter password it says WorkerThread Died in Newsbin and the remote app hangs, when I try to use 1 as the password Newsbin closes and when I edit the NBI file and write 1 in the password section Newsbin also says WorkerThread Died and the app hangs!

RC3 is up. I suspect it's not going to solve this for you though. You have something weird and unexpected going on. If Bruce can get it working, you ought to be able to get it working too.

It's working for numerous people. Just not working for you. Your failure mode is odd enough that I don't think it's NBRemote or Newsbin. I suspect something is monitoring the connections and messing things up.

http://sourceforge.net/projects/nbremote/

The RAR file listed there contains an EXE file you can run on the same PC as Newsbin. In the options set the address to "127.0.0.1". You won't need the password or key I don't think (if you do add them). Then click the "Connect" button with Newsbin running and you should see a prompt. This program is how I test remote control.

Are you doing this over the air or over WiFi? What IOS platform are you using?

When I click "Connect" I see: "200 Newsbin Server 6.20RC3" and "127.0.0.1". I can click "List Downloads" and it shows me my download list, but I can't upload a NZB, it doesn't show up in Newsbin.

Over WiFi, I'm using iOS 5.0.1

How is this different than using NBRemote? You made it sound like you couldn't even connect to Newsbin using NBRemote.

What happens if you manually load the NZB in Newsbin (load NZB button) does anything show up?

Yeah that's right I couldn't even connect to Newsbin using NBRemote.
Newsbin is working fine, I'm using it since years without problems.
I only got problems with NBRemote.

If you can't upload NZB's with the test program you downloaded, then it's not surprising that NBRemote can't do it too.

When you used the tool I told you about. What happens when you hit the "Upload NZB" button and feed it an NZB file? They should be listed in the test tools window. If that works. Select one and click "Download Files" and see what happens. If that doesn't work then I'd suspect a bum NZB.

Given that this thread seems to discuss two different problems, the solution for the NZB problem is posted here: viewtopic.php?f=45&t=29521

Is the remaining problem that you can't activate remote access in Newsbin?

This works when I click "Download Files" the files show up in Newsbin and will be downloaded, I thought it's enough to click "Upload NZB" to get the NZB in Newsbin.

But my problem isn't that I can't upload NZB's to Newsbin I couldn't even connect with the app.

Until you can get a basic remote connection working with Newsbin, there's really no point in struggling with NBRemote. I don't think it's two problems, as one basic one.
