Version 6.80 Release Candidate 1 Available...

Postby dexter » Fri Dec 29, 2017 4:33 pm

This is a Release Candidate. We are in feature freeze and only critical bugs will be fixed prior to production release. Thank you all for putting 6.80 Beta through its paces over the last 8 months. It has been a long beta cycle but the version has been highly functional throughout thanks to your efforts identifying critical issues and requesting needed functionality.

Summary of changes since B13:
  • Fixed issue where downloading a sample isn't putting "Sample" on the filename if there is an unrar failure.
  • Fixed issue where sampling deleted the rars and output files.
  • Fixed issue where compacted NZB's don't always sort the PARS to the bottom of the list. Would cause slow repair and unrar.
  • Changed flag for "force group selection" under Options -> Servers -> Really Advanced because of reports it is stuck on.
  • Fixed issue when Newsbin selects a group and the group does not exist, the download would not work. Only was an issue if "Force Group Selection" is enabled.
  • Translations have been enabled. If you find some missing translations and are willing to provide updates, please PM me or use our Contact Form.

There are two known issues that likely won't be addressed before the final release.
1) Some file size info returned by search is wrong until expanded. This issue is on the Search Database side. Once it is resolved there, it'll work correctly without upgrading Newsbin.
2) Cosmetic problem in header based watches. Doesn't show or know the correct group in the post list.

The full change history and the download link is on the Newsbin Beta Page.

If you find any issues, please reply to this thread or use our Technical Support Contact Form.

The issue that started in B13 of the program opening up to Search instead of Groups as been the standard is still in this Release Candidate. Was hoping to see this fixed.

Thumbnails tab disappears between sessions

Postby bd baker » Sat Dec 30, 2017 12:46 pm

KingFish reported this starting with B13 and I see it is still a "feature" in RC1 - the thumbnails tab visibility isn't being saved in the pane configuration between sessions.

On both my PCs (Win7Pro 32bit Intel CPU, Win8.1 32bit AMD CPU) 6.80 Release Candidate 1 is a disaster inasmuch as nothing I tried works.

Can't load NZB files either via drag&drop of via Ctl-F: nothing appears in Downloading tab.

Failed Files tab emptied (w/b13 was full).

Won't shut down; must reboot windows to close it!

Reverted to b13 and all is well.

We discovered an issue with the 32 bit version. Quade is working on it. Hoping for a quick turnaround on RC2

Yeah, you're in the target zone. Have no idea why the 32 bit release doesn't work. 64 bit debug and release work and 32 bit debug works. I'm probably going to have to turn down some of the optimizing the compiler does to make the code faster. Apparently it's broken in 32 bit mode.

OS: Windows Server 2016 64 bit
Newsbin 6.80RC1 64 bit

When I upgrade from B10 to RC1. While downloading there is a error in the Logging tab:

[12/31 14:24:11] ERROR FileIOThread - internal crash

Sometimes after a restart of newsbin it does stop downloading within minutes or crash completely.

Is someome else experience this behaviour? I'm do not have this problem with B10.

Yes...! See this post viewtopic.php?f=44&t=42645
Did you try b9 or b11? I don't think that I tried b10.

If you already added a media download to the download list, sampling lets you decode part if it during download so, you can view what's being downloaded.

I assume you're talking about the right click menu in the download list.

Ok I tracked down what's up with the 32 bit version. It wasn't what I expected. I needed to re-build the par dll's. For whatever reason 64 bits didn't mind the old DLL but 32 bits does.

Fixed the tabs closing problem too.

Thanks. didn't know you can do that, I just open the RAR parts folder and drag the main one onto VLC..

SO, this unrars what is already downloaded, and opens the result in VLC (my media player). Nice! but shouldn't it delete the sample once I close the VLC process? (or when I delete the download, proving I don't want it, so it gets erased with all the RAR parts..)

I asked to a similar feature once, but it was different: download just the first N parts of a bunch of items, so I don't have to baby-sit the sample process.

The sample files get deleted periodically from the samples folder in the data folder. The rars can be deleted when you delete the rest of the download from the download list.

Newsbin doesn't track VLC or anything, it hands the media file off to VLC then goes about it's business.

Oops sorry I spoke too soon. While all is well w/RC2 on one of my PCs (Win8.1 32bit AMD CPU), RC2 still has all the same issues on my other PC (Win7Pro 32bit Intel CPU).

The repair DLL is what was screwed up in RC1, you might want to delete the PAR dll's from the install folder and then install again. I tested in 32 bits pretty thoroughly.

Ah, on that PC not only does RC2 still not work, but b13 doesn't work now either.

So...anything for me to try before uninstalling and reinstalling?

After a thorough (Revo) uninstall of Newsbin RC2, I reinstalled RC2 and...all the same "nothing works" on Newsbin on that PC (even after downgrading to b13). (Everything else continues to work perfectly on that PC.)

It seems suspicious (i.e. too much of a coincidence) to me that these are the exact same symptoms (I had never experienced before) that I had with RC1 on the both PCs.

After another uninstall (this time of b13) I installed b13 and all was well...until I tried to put RC2 back on, and again all the same "nothing works" on Newsbin on that PC. So I think there's still an RC2 issue.

For now I'll (do a 3rd) uninstall and (since I want a working version) stay with a b13.

CPU info: BOTH my PCs are embarrassingly old (I'm on a fixed disability income). The CPU on which RC2 doesn't work: Intel Pentium 4 Northwood 3.2GHz (a single core).

Sadly, I'm sure this is probably the issue. I'm not sure exactly why though but it seems the most likely cause. I'll see if this is something I can fix. I've switched to the latest version of the devel tools and that's likely the break point.

I understand, Quade, that's cool.

I'll leave nb680B13 on that PC. It isn't my primary PC, and it's Win7 does go End of Life in a couple years. By then I hope to be able to get a new PC.

Just picked up RC2. I'm on 32bit Windows 10. Nothing works. I can't get new headers. I can't add anything to the download list. I have to go to the task manager to shut it down.
Going back to nb680b11 for the time being.

Having read the other posts in this thread, I decided to check what CPU I had. Intel Atom CPU D510 @ 1.66GHz. Hope that helps.

I'm not seeing anything in how I'm building it that would keep the celeron D from running it. At this point I'm not sure what's up. I have one old machine I could probably try on.

It's one of these. 2006. If it runs on this.... Well, I don't want to borrow trouble.

Yeah, there's some off break point. 64 bit seems much more reliable than 32 at this point.

I reproduced this on my old machine. I deleted the PAR DLL from the install folder and it started to work. An easy way to tell if it works is to look at the logging tab. If you only see two lines after startup, it's crashed internally. If you see more than 2, it's working. I'd try this. It'll revert to the slow repair code without the DLL.

So the hangup is the repair DLL and I now have a way to test it.

I'm thinking about removing multi-core support and the dependency on tbb.dll for the future for 32 bit builds. Multi-core repair would probably make my test machine unusable.

Ah yes, I noticed just 2 lines of Logging; I didn't say anything because I never look at Logging so I didn't know it was atypical.

Remove when? Before the RC2 install (as usual), or do you mean after the RC2 install?

After install, go into the install folder and remove the PAR dll. I'd remove filetype dll as well. I've asked dex to stop delivering that one next time around.

Success! With those 2 files removed after install:

On startup there were 5 lines of Logging. I drag-n-dropped an NZB and it downloads/unRARs AOK. RC2 also now shuts down normally on that PC.

Sweet! Thank you very much, Quade.

I just reinstalled RC2, then removed par2repair.dll & it seems to work fine now. I haven't yet removed LibFiletype32.dll. Should I do so? I did take the opportunity to delete several years worth of release notes text files. :)

Ok Dex figured it out. He was delivering the prior repair DLL for 32 bit, the broken one from RC1 to RC2. He fixed the installer and it should all be good next RC
