Apparent Stall

Postby Penalty22 » Tue Sep 23, 2025 2:47 pm

I don't know if this is a Newsbin problem or a News server problem.

For the last few days when I start Newsbin, it appears to start downloading headers and stops.

No error messages.

Just three lines in the log:
High PAR Pausing Enabled
High Par2Repair -Single-core 4.0
High MessageId Filter: enabled
[there is nothing in the filter]

Until this started, immediately after staring Newsbin, I'd get a ton of news server errors. Sometimes it would continue to download items and sometimes not. If I restarted Newsbin, it would sometimes restart downloading, but still showing news server errors. If I left Newsbin open overnight, it would appear to download a few segments of a file every few hours and usually complete the file download

But not now.
Now there are no news server errors, but only a rare downloading of anything including headers.

Since I didn't get any reply, I went ahead and totally uninstalled NewsBin and reinstalled it. Downloads have restarted, but I'm still getting the 500 server errors as I had before. I've contacted, again, the news server vendor about those.

I have no clue as to what was preventing NewsBin from downloading anything before the uninstall/re-install.

It has happened again

Suddenly, I have no downloads and just the same three lines.

Something is getting changed and I'm not doing it.

I can't say for sure. It could be your news service provider, as I have no issues.

What version? If not the latest beta nb691RC4-5939, go to beta forum and get it > https://forums.newsbin.com/viewforum.php?f=44

There is too much info on an error 500 (via Google search), most seem to point to a server issue.
See if any help is there.

Test other providers see if they offer monthly, yes it's more money monthly but then easy to cancel after a month and if you like them then look for a yearly deal.

This is beyond server errors. Nothing downloads, I just get the 3 lines in the log.
News server has acknowledged that the 500 errors which I was getting before everything stopped was their problem. When this happened thy suggested I try Newleecher to see if I could download from their server with that. And, I could.

The complete uninstall/re-install worked for two days until it switched back to downloading nothing and just showing the 3 lines in the log. No error messages.

I was using RC3, tried RC4 on another complete uninstall/re-install. Got the same three lines, nothing more. Tried to download groups and got the message "myServer None HELP 100 Help" I think this means it's not connected to the server. Checked that server info is correct.

How are you downloading?
Although I see you say, even headers don't always download.

Also, as far as I know, a bug was introduced in RC4 about watch lists here >https://forums.newsbin.com/viewtopic.php?p=233831#p233831
I don't know if it would affect RC3 which you say has issues.
It may be a bad idea, but you could go back to:
Version 6.90, or even 6.82.
That's assuming RC3 never worked right. But with you just reporting the issue now, it must have worked at one point.

Maybe Quade will come by sometime and think of something. He has not been as active on the forum as in the past.

One other thing you could try is changing Status Tab logging to debug to see if any more info shows.

I don't do much with NZB's via Newsbin, but I use the search and can download, and I do have some smaller groups I can get headers from, and I am using RC4.
And can download from groups.

If it's some kind of error, usually Verbose shows, but I know debug will show more info.
I guess, even if you have a bad news provider, you still would get some type of error in the log.

Newsleecher has NO support and has not had an update for several years, so not sure if that's the answer. Although I know Agent newsreader still kind of works, and they have stopped support and no updates in years. If you just do NZB's you should do a search for SABnzbd as that is very activity maintained but only downloads using NZB's.

With the "myServer None HELP 100 Help" I can only suggest deleting the news server info you have in Newsbin, any and all, and add back the server(s).
Might be some bad info, and deleting it completely and adding back may fix that.

Overall some crazy thing is happening, maybe debug may show you as again most other solutions I would suggest you should have received some error in the logs.
Because I would suggest firewall issue, but I would guess Newbin would say can't connect or connect error.
Maybe check your Antivirus, but again I think you would get some type of error would be reported if that was interfering.

It also still would not hurt to try another newsserver provider. newsgroupdirect offers good support for newsservers. You can even get a small block to test, although looking a small block is about $10 and one month full service is $9

Other than that, maybe even try contacting Newsbin support directly. https://www.newsbin.com/contact.php

I've tried most of what you suggested. Something is preventing Newsbin from contacting the news server. I went to RC3 in August, RC4 this week. I was having issues with 6.90, but may try that again.
