Any Tips For 5GBE? Network?

Postby jimerb » Wed Dec 31, 2025 12:48 am

My ISP was trying to save me moving to verizon to get 2.5gbe for the same price i was paying now. Then my current ISP said they would counter and offered me 5gbe internet for the same price i'm paying now ($99mo for 3 years.)

So I said sure.

Much of my network is 10gbe already including the wan port, switch and NIC's.

I'm hoping to get some tips to try to max out my download speed. I've ramped the connections up from 8 to 48 but still I'm only getting about a gigabit. Speed tests in the browser range between 1.8gbe to 5gbe depending on the remote end.

* I'm saving to local SSD
* Connections 48 (out of 50)
* Plenty of memory and CPU is not maxing out.
* Antivirus not active

Any other tips? Like maybe to improve parallel processing of multiple downloads concurrently?

You could try, with Newsbin closed, edit Newsbin.nbi file and add ChunkCacheSize=4000 or if it's there change to ChunkCacheSize=4000
Or if people think that's too high can try 2000, then 3000, then 4000 to see the difference.
Some look down on this, but it helped me, even with just 1 gig speed.

Only other options I can think of, get a different provider like Newshosting who offers 100 connections.
OR
Get a second provider like Newshosting which would then give you 100 + 50.
Although it's always recommended not to use the max like you only use 48 of 50, so to be safe only use max 45 and 95 from Newshosting.
As always, just try in increments max of 5 connections each time till you get the best speed.
And I see you do use an SSD, that's a must.

I am a bit surprised 48 don't give better speed. But there is an older interesting post on reddit https://www.reddit.com/r/usenet/comment ... ia_usenet/
