Version 6 Release Candidate 1

Here is the first official Release Candidate for Version 6. This means there is a feature freeze for Version 6.00. If you find any show-stopper bugs, we want to know about them. Otherwise, this will be the first offering for Version 6. If there was some feature you were dying to have that isn't in 6.00, you can lobby for it in the forums for a future release. Quade already has ideas for more features but we want to establish a baseline for 6.0 before he continues. We feel 6.0 is head and shoulders better than 5.59 as it sits.

Here is a summary of changes from the last beta release:

  • Added support for .xtm files
  • Fixed focus issue in Server Options when arriving from the Servers tab.
  • Fixed issue creating NZB files when in expanded view in a post list
  • Hooked up server download counters. Counts all download traffic
  • Miscellaneous cosmetic changes

Many other changes and more details on these changes are listed on the Newsbin Beta Page, along with the download link. People using download managers may have problems getting the download to work. If possible, disable your download manager before trying to get the beta. If it won't work, PM me and I'll send a direct link.

Thanks to all involved in the beta development for Version 6! Newsbin continues to evolve and gets better every day due to the active participation of the community with helpful bug reports and creative feature requests.

If you find anything that should keep this from being the final Version 6 release, reply to this thread or create a new post in this forum. You can also contact us directly through our Technical Support Form or swing by our irc channel. It's #newsbin on irc.newsbin.com.

Still having the issue with NB not showing all downloaded headers, have to keep hitting 'Show Posts' to see all the downloaded headers!

I tried to reproduce this but couldn't. Depending on what header download mode you use, it might actually take a couple minutes from the time the header download finishes till they show up in the post list. If you uncheck "Background Update" in the options, the header download will stay listed until the headers are all imported.

Background Update is unticked, I don't think I've ever had it ticked. In fact, I've not messed with any settings for quite a while as everything was working fine and just kept upgrading over the previous installation.

I skipped B13 and B14 and only noticed this in B15! I'll keep an eye on it and see how it goes, might also re-install B12 and see if the same thing happens!

What are you doing when it crashes?

I have always had persistent crashes in 6. Am told it is my computer, even though I get it on 2 different machines, clean builds, and both run 24/7. One of them runs 5.59 24/7 flawlessly.
If I never touch the running program, I can see it do it's header downloads. When I bring it to the forground and I see this.

As soon as I move the mouse into the program area, this.

I'm not doubting you but, if I can't reproduce it, I can't fix it.

My rule of thumb is:
"pc crashing = windows"
Newsbin crashing = Newsbin".

There do seem to be some timing issues that happen to lower end machines but, even if true, it's still a bug.

Edit: What's your "display age" set to? Just for grins, you could try setting it real short. Say 5 days and see if you still have a problem. I'm wondering if it's related to importing V5 header or using headers from an older beta.

I set intial download to 2 days and display age to 2. This isn't a slow machine either, but it does use internal video.

Motherboard:
CPU Type DualCore AMD Athlon Black Edition 7850, 2800 MHz (14 x 200)
Motherboard Name Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-US2H v1.0 (2 PCI, 1 PCI-E x1, 1 PCI-E x16, 4 DDR2 DIMM, Audio, Video, Gigabit LAN, IEEE-1394)
Motherboard Chipset AMD 780G, AMD K10
System Memory 3584 MB (DDR2-800 DDR2 SDRAM)
DIMM1: Mushkin 991599 (996599) 2 GB DDR2-800 DDR2 SDRAM (5-5-5-18 @ 400 MHz) (4-4-4-12 @ 266 MHz)
DIMM2: Mushkin 991599 (996599) 2 GB DDR2-800 DDR2 SDRAM (5-5-5-18 @ 400 MHz) (4-4-4-12 @ 266 MHz)

I should add this, when I put on rc1 I didn't do anything but start the program and let it sit. It downloaded headers on it's own.

Is anyone else having problems getting the installer to work? When I run it I get an NSIS error telling me the package is corrupted.
I've tried downloading it from Firefox and IE and it makes no difference.

I'm running Win7 64-bit.

Thanks.

There's been an elusive issue with a handful of people having trouble downloading the installer, similar symptoms. Right now they're trying to gather as much data as possible as to why some are having issues and the vast majority don't. Certainly the first thing I would think of is some sort of anti-virus interfering with the download. At a very early stage in the testing the installer got warnings from nod32, but that was dealt with long ago. Any non-default system protection installed might be causing this, if you have any information to share that would be useful.

Weird issue under wine.

Open NB and open some GoG's

Hit the Show Desktop button - hides NB fine
Click on the NB tab on the taskbar and it opens but only shows the Groups tab nothing else, trying to open the search etc does nothing. Doing the same but re-hitting the show desktop button shows NB but only the groups & download lists no search pane.

Now I assume this is a compiz/wine issue and nothing to do with NB but thought it was a wierdie and worth a note. :D

Clear your browser cache and try again. Otherwise your browser will hand you the same bad file again. If you still can't get a clean copy, PM me and I'll send you an alternative link.

Click on the NB tab on the taskbar and it opens but only shows the Groups tab nothing else,

If you have "Groups" set to autohide. I've seen it expand the groups tab to cover the entire app. Drag and Dropping the right hand border to resize the groups tab fixed this for me.

Regarding the issue with NB not showing all downloaded headers, it seems to be picture groups that's mainly affected by this if that helps?

I can click ok and proceed with opening any NZB in the folder.

That error doesn't sound like something newsbin would put up. Wonder if there's something else intercepting the load.

Nope the groups tab is shown in its "normal" position at the lhs top, not set to auto hide. As I say probably a compiz glitch the new version seems to have some "issues"

RC1 doesn't appear to be honoring the "Use Chunks Folder" setting. I have it set and it is putting the NB2 files in the download folder.

According to the release note file support for it has been removed, but the setting still remains in the GUI .

Known Issues:
Use Chunks Folder function no longer exists but option is still in the Options/Advanced screen.

Minor cosmetic issue - the Windows 7 taskbar progress integration seems to like setting itself to about 75%. Whether I have an empty download list or 100GB queued, it seems to set and stick at this value.

Wonder how I can trigger that? The task bar button gets set to a high water mark. Say you add 20 items to the list, the high water mark gets set to 20. Then when things are removed, it shows the difference between the high water mark and the current count. Adding new things will reset the high water mark.

I don't unserstand any of that :D

Another example, I just added 2 NZBs for collections of about 6GB each. The taskbar was stuck at 75% when I first fired Newsbin up and stayed that way once the 2 NZBs were imported and started downloading. After the first set downloaded and extracted OK, the taskbar shows about 30% full. The second set was stuck with some incompletes so I told Newsbin to assemble those which it did -taskbar still at 30%. Pars came down OK, repair starts, still no change. Extraction starts, still the same. Extraction completes so now download list is empty, and now the progress gets reset to 0 so it is sort of working but I don't understand most of its behaviour and what it's trying to show me.

Well, sounds like it's working the way it's supposed to. It's the count of parent items in the list that matters to the bar, not the number of files onside one of these compacted sets. It might have an "off by 1" problem if it's showing 3 segments when there's only 2 items in the list.

No biggies, but in RC1, "Enable the error popup window" seems to have enabled itself.
Also, "Hide till Restart" doesn't - it pops back up, if there are more errors.

Out of curiosity, would it be difficult to allow a toggle to turn off the Windows 7 taskbar integration entirely? I'm probably in the minority, but I don't like it when any of my applications show those progress bars; it just makes things look more cluttered to me. If it would require anything more than a couple quick lines of code, forget about it, but, if it's easy to implement, it's something I'd certainly appreciate.

Thank you for all your work on Newsbin. I just moved from v5 to the v6 RC, and I'm reminded once again that it's one of the rare pieces of software that genuinely improves with each generation, without introducing any unnecessary fluff or bulk.

I could probably add a hidden option....

[SETTINGS]
ShowTaskProgress=0

Will disable the task bar progress. Will be in RC2 and the future.

To be clear, its not in RC1. He says it'll be in RC2 which isn't out yet. I'll need confirmation from Quade but I have a feeling it'll be under the existing [Settings] section.

Sorry if I confused anyone; he was perfectly clear with the original post. I was just adding it now so I wouldn't forget about it when the next release comes out. Having erroneous options in the settings file doesn't have any impact, does it?
