Beta 6.90 B2 crashes on start up

Postby blenky » Wed Jan 13, 2021 9:57 pm

I'm attempting to upgrade to 6.90 B2 on my W10 desktop but whatever I try (fresh install or upgrade from 6.82) I get the following error on start up

Application error
The exception illegal instruction
An attempt was made to execute an illegal instruction
(0xc0000001d) occurred in the application at location
0x0000000140079730

I did the upgrade on my laptop without issue.

Gone back to 6.82.

I also tried nb690B3-5219.exe and nb690B4-5231.exe and get same error.

Any ideas? Cheers

Yeah I'm not sure why this is happening yet. I don't believe I'm using advanced instructions so, I take the "illegal instruction" thing with a grain of salt.

What kind of CPU does the desktop use?

Desktop has a AMD Phenom II X6 1090T. OS is W10 pro 10.0.19042.

Laptop that works OK has an AMD Ryzen 3 2300U. OS is W10.0.19041.

As the laptop was a revision behind in W10 I uninstalled Newsbin, updated W10 to build 19042. After reinstalling B2 on laptop did not get an error but Newsbin did not open. I removed beta 2 and installed beta 3 and this worked. Removed Beta 3 and installed Beta 4 and this worked. As a double check removed 4 and put back 2. Again no error but did not open.

So in summary

On desktop B2, 3 and 4 error as described
On laptop, beta 2 does not open but beta 3 and 4 are OK.

Hope that helps

I think I figured it out. I was building for "AVX" and older CPU's don't have it. Next beta should work.
