New ISP; Gigabit; Repeated Disconnects While NB Downloads

Postby BrownBullhead » Tue Nov 24, 2020 3:18 am

Hello all:

Just coming to bounce some thoughts here for "support". Recently got a new ISP. Gigabit Fibre 940mbps (up and down).

When I queue downloads, I get about 10 minutes of super fast downloads done, then the modem (Home Hub 3000) drops the connection and my entire house has no wired nor Wifi.

After 5 minutes or so of idle time, the modem reconnects to the ISP. Then I might get 10 minutes of connectivity, and the cycle repeats.

I've tried NB with SSL and without. I've tried 30 connections and 60. NNTP host is Newhsosting. Ethernet connection speediest to 950-ish up and down.

Killer Ethernet 2600 but with their "Drivers Only" package. No software suite.

Any thoughts?

Fast hard drives, brand new PC even, so not sure what else I should try.

Sounds to me like a problem with the modem or network beyond the modem. I would not have thought it should ever be dropping connections for all devices when it is working correctly.

Agreed. Seems like a network problem. I'd reduce connections to 10 and see both what speed you get and whether it still kills the router.

30-60 connections is excessive. Firstly I'm skeptical they permit so many connections, second it can actually hurt performance.

Hello folks.

Did some more of my own troubleshooting and messaging their tech support.

Download between midnight and 8am and I can turn OFF speed limited and downloads will go about 600 mbps and upward.

8am to about 11pm, forget about it. Their Home Hub 3000 router/modem loses it's connection. All clients in house are still connected to the HH3000 but no Internet at all.

All status lights showing normal icons on face of the router. ISP asked me to confirm that.

Connection to internet will resume after 5 to 6 minutes without any notification or signs. Just find out by trying random site again.

Something about the time of day of the download, vis-a-vis speed limiter OFF seems to be the trigger!?

P.S. My newshosting plan does allow 60 connections but I will try dialing it down to less than 30 and see if I can still hit that 600mbps to 800mbps download speed at overnight time. :)

So during the day I need to leave speed limiter ON and set to 200mbps (max the NB software allows) with scheduler enable to control it. Otherwise my spouse can't work from home losing her connection every 5 minutes.

Your ISP is being disingenuous. I'm sure they know why the router is disconnecting and then waiting 5 minutes to start working again. If I had to guess, I'd guess bad hardware OR some sort of undocumented cap on your download speed at certain times of the day. It might also be that other people in your house are using it at the same time so, you hit some connection limit in the router itself.

I'd try 30 with no limiter and see what happens. If 30 has the same symptoms, then I'd suspect the undocumented speed cap idea.

Hello my friend.

So Saturday evening, I tried various combos of 10 to 40 connections, speed limiter 200 mbps and speed limiter off. Anytime download speed sustained above 500 mbps (limited off of course) with WHATEVER amount of connections to Newshosting, my ISP 'net connection dropped. But as of now at 01:18 am, I can run 60 connections, speed limit OFF, and I am hitting as high as 800 mbps download!

These testing windows, I've been getting my other family to go away from their clients for a bit, so i could isolate the effect my PC client was having. So I think you're right. I think they're not telling the whole truth.

So how I am going to do this is set the scheduler ON, with 7 days a week, 08:00 to 24:00, to be "slow" (200 mbps speed limiter) and then the remaining "overnight" (00:01 to 07:59) to be full steam ahead. Thank you for your help.

My point about the connections is that fewer is always better then more. If you can sustain 800 with 30 connections or even fewer then everything will work better if you only run 30 connections. You hit a point of diminishing returns with connections.

The goal isn't more connections. The goal is maximum speed with minimum connections. I suggest just running enough connections to hit your internet speed.

Even during the fast overnight I was not able to get above 450 mbps or so until I sent into the 50 connections range. 30 connections only yielded about 350 to 425 mbps. They are now suggesting that my home home 3000 (i.e. their device) needs to have the software reloaded? I use only their device since switching. No 3rd party router of my own.

Well, there's experimental proof right there.

Since I still had the former ISP's hardware 16 days later, I called them up today. Got a competitive price on same speed (same 940 mbps downstream, only 100 mbps upstream) but I never had these drops with them.

At 12:25am at night, I am getting speeds up and down, but as high as 952.9 Mbps = 119.1125 MB/s using 60 connections to Newshosting.

Now, if I could just get Magic Jack VOIP to work on ANY connection without missing incoming calls, I'd be a happy camper. USB, Ethernet-to-Router, whatever method, incoming calls often don't ring our handsets. :( Tried behind this ISP, using their router (bridged, and not) and behind a newer Asus; SIP passthrough disabled or not. I guess I get what I pay for. Wonder if "OOMA Telo" would be any better?

15 months later, the issue remains unresolved.

Tl;DR = when I use Newshosting with my full 1gbps bandwidth for anything more than a few minutes, my ISP appears to shut down my entire home connection for ~10 minutes.

My ISP is a former provincial local called MTS, then bought by a national (Bell Canada) to become now BellMTS in my province. The local claims there are certain things the national does that they can't control nor see.

Did some more back and forth with them today and they say: Everything on the modem and the account look ok, The one thing that we can't see is if the bandwidth is being throttled.

Then they point me to the Fair Use Policy (https://www.bellmts.ca/legal/fair-use-policy) which has a couple interesting points such as:

Flat rate or unlimited use plans and services offered are subject to customer using the service under an ordinary range of use and in a way that does not consume excessive network capacity and/or adversely affect Bell MTS’s ability to provide services to other users. By way of example and not limitation, the following are considered by Bell MTS to be outside of an ordinary range of use thereby consuming excessive network capacity:
Prolonged continuous use of high bandwidth applications such as multi-media streaming, voice over Internet protocol or LBS (location based services) or any other similar applications

Does Bell MTS have data use limits?
Bell MTS does not have data use limits on its personal High Speed Internet plans, they are unlimited.
Bell MTS reserves the right to restrict data usage in the event that a customers’ data usage is so excessive that it impacts the network capacity and our ability to provide service to other customers.
Typical browsing or average household online streaming behaviours are not considered excessive use.

So I guess I need to throttle my own speeds using Limiter features of NBP to allow continuous downloading, or face my entire home of devices being disconnected 6x or more per hour, 24 hours per day. I realize I risk sounding "entitled" here but on some levels, I feel like why even pay for a 1gbps connection if I can't grip it and rip it?

P.S. And oh yeah, Magic Jack was totally screwed up. OOMA has been flawless so far!
