Is there a way to exclude specific newsgroups from search results?
I search for "ballet" and get what appears to be thousands of results. But I don't want anything in dvd format. The lion's share of the results are in a.b.dvd.music.classical
It would be great if I could search for something like "ballet -newsgroup:a.b.dvd.music.classical". Is there anything like this?

You can filter IN the groups you want to search in but not filter OUT groups you don't want to search in. If you picked a group topic before you search, it would only look in the groups in the topic for the results.

Sure would like to see the ability to filter groups from searches as well.
While I'm at it, adding (or fully implementing) regex search would make the feature MUCH more useful.
