Who's still using Newsbin after all these years?

Postby Porkrinds » Sun Nov 24, 2024 8:45 pm

Just wanted to say thanks for keeping up with the maintenance required to adapt to changes to usenet over the years. It's not been perfect, but it works. The UI doesn't bother me like some.

I can't imagine this project brings in much income, so again, thanks for keeping things workable in the light of all the FOSS projects out there.

It occasionally saddens me with the way Usenet is going but, nothing last forever. It's been a good run.

I've been working on RC4 recently. Wanted to put it up last week but someone reported autopar problems I'm looking at.

I still use it every days. Usenetserver has about 10 years of files on it. I haven't seen them all yet...

Thanks Quade 8) and it saddens me the way the internet has evolved in general, not just usenet. Automation is nice, but I also miss the days of browsing headers looking for something new to try.

When I'm bored I'll browse the Newsbin MOTD archive for nostalgia. Looking back I wish I had posted here more and lurked less. Oh well. Cheers

I've been using Newsbin Pro almost every day since sometime during the year of 1995. The security department at my internet provider once called asking "Are you trying to download the entire internet?".

Easynews has more than 16 years of files. "I haven't seen them all yet..."

I still like the search feature of Newsbin, although many indexers are surfacing.

I kind of favor Sabnzbd when downloading, always gives full max speed of my internet and little to no issue with any nzb used.

But then again, if I use the search feature in Newbin I use Newsbin to download and see little issues most times when downloading.
Plus there are still a few small groups, although hard to find, when most providers give you close to 6,000 days retention.
But I do have a few small groups I follow with Newsbin. No other newsreader even comes close to being supported now. Look around and see the last dates other newsreaders were even close to being updated.

I've used Newsbin since 2001, and since advent of nzb files have no need for any other usenet tool. I still use NB on an almost daily basis.

Thanks Quade & Dexter for keeping the lights on

Newsbin is excellent for the way I use the Internet.

You mostly have to use Indexers now to get nzb's for what you want to download. I have an Easynews subscription, which for an extra couple of dollars, comes with an add-on which has a no download cap when you use NNTP instead of the web to download. So Newsbin can get unlimited downloads for no extra cost apart from the initial outlay for the programme, a usenet subscription and Indexer subscriptions. You can get bye without Indexers by using the Easynews search and just downloading nzbs which can then be loaded into Newsbin.

I still find a lot using the Newsbinpro search.
The obfuscation is making things harder and harder and forcing the need for nzb files from certain indexers to get certain content.

I am actually surprised to know that the easynews search still works. I never ever used them, I did use usenetsever which had a type of search giving a list of nzb but seemed like it was outdated. I use newshosting now mostly and even with them, they provide their own news browser, per se, and I find many things are just plain missing from some groups as in it acts like some groups have not had posts for at least a year or more and getting headers, even though it's a huge task because of the 6000+ day retention, there are still new active posts in many groups. Some groups are just to the point it's pointless and almost impossible to get all headers.

If you want the latest movie or TV you most likely will find you need a few indexers now. It's almost all obfuscated.
