Paid Search Engine question

Postby Penalty22 » Fri Jan 03, 2025 12:43 pm

I've got the paid version of the Search engine. It looked like the search engine was only looking back a few days, so I put in some generic terms that would clearly have show up more than a few days back. Search is set to 9 yrs, but the results only went back no more than 10 days on any search.

Am I missing something or is there a problem with the search engine?

I did a search term, and it went back to 2010.
Make sure it's set to Internet and no group is selected. You can search per group, but to initially test, try with it empty.

ADDED: after looking more, it might be, for some unknown reason, limited to number of results.
I did just teacher, and it only goes back to 2023 with 1891 results.
Similar with just using dog, only results going back to 2024, and using cat only results going back to 2024.

Very concerning as tried teacher in watch lists and get same results, watch list/search should bring over 3500 days, and news servers are now over 5900 days retention.
@dexter, @Quade ??

But, to answer your question, I do manage more than 10 days.

Search results are limited to 2000 at a time. You can grab the next 2000 or so by clicking the icon to the right of the search bar that says "load older files into the list". Or you can apply some filters to narrow the search results down which will return older posts.

That's how I had mine set. Also used 9 yrs.

I did notice one thing. In the last column to the right in the header, yours shows 1411/1411. Mine shows 3/1320 and has only three results showing. This tells me there were 1320 results, but only 3 are showing. Tried it with a couple other generic searches and got the same type result (i.e., 12/2600, 4/1811)

How do I get the others to show up?

The numbers tell me you have some filter filtering out the visible results. Maybe a size or poster filter. You can disable the visible filters by unclick the button to the left of the "Min Size" that should disable all the filtering. Then you can try to determine what filter is hiding results. Often it's a size filter. Sometimes it's a poster filter which is too broad.

Thanks dex for all the help and I now got more Newsbin info in my head.
Working on fixing my watch lists and using the suggestion made for that.

Clicking next to "Min" size and showing "None" had no effect. Still getting results like 3/514 with the 3 files names showing.

There has to be a filter somewhere else that's controlling this.

All I can say is something is still filtering. Look again at my screenshot(a few posts back) and set your settings like mine. It should show all as in my screenshot(a few posts back).

I don't know of many other filters other than a poster filter.
Maybe show a screenshot of yours, you can skip the search term if you need like I did in my screenshot.
Quade knows more.

My screen looked just like yours. I can't seem to paste the image in this reply
so

Subject Field Internet All groups None None 9 years None None 24/1983.

I've also tried it with None in place of 9 years. The numbers stay the same.

I've searched for other filters, but nothing seems to apply to searches.

Go under Options -> Settings and select "Poster Settings" and see if you have some poster lockouts configured that are getting applied.

Only one there is "Dirty Rotten Spammers" which I don't remember putting there.

I've also played with the download age with no effect. I see files in the group lists that are not picked up by a search because they're more than a few days old.

I'm betting it's something really simple that should smack me in the face.

Sorry, then wait for Quade as it looks like even dexter talks about the only other thing possible to filter and that was poster and even at that the list would have to be pretty large to block so many posts. I can only show what worked for me and if your settings are the same it's something weird.
"Dirty Rotten Spammers" is common for Newsbin.
And, anything else listed there, could block some, but I still don't see it blocking so many.

OH, WAIT one more thing, go to Options, settings, Spam filter settings and set like this. If not, I am out of ideas, I looked at most other settings and nothing seems like it would affect this.

What do you have set under Options -> Settings -> Spam Filter Settings? If you did set it like Stan did, and the search results contain mostly encrypted files, then you'll definitely see only a fraction of available posts.

I have looked and looked and can't find a connection to what might be causing you to get such LOW results as 24/1983.

I guess you could try as dexter says and uncheck hide encrypted search results, but this has yet to effect any of my searches to limit to such low results as 24/1983.
Might also then want to try to uncheck hide spam search results. My main point of showing the screenshot was to have you make sure the one box that is unchecked in the screenshot is unchecked in your settings. As many people post with invalid email addresses and missing the @.

I see no other settings that look like they would affect this, and I looked several times. Only other thing you MIGHT want to try is backup the Newsbin.nbi to another name, like maybe Newsbin.nbi.org and then delete Newsbin.nbi all with newbin closed and then open newsbin. I think this should reset to default most if not all settings, but I could be wrong, but it's almost last resort.
The last resort would be to uninstall Newbin and delete all files including database(s) etc associated with Newsbin, Again I would HIGHLY recommend making a backup of all database(s) etc in Newbin/Newsbin data folder. I use WinRAR, or you can use 7-zip to make the backup.

Again with my 2 screenshots above, I got 1411/1411. Try searching teacher, I get 1981/1981 to start, and that’s before loading more posts.
After at least 3 to 4 loads of older posts, I get 8718/8718

I even unclicked everything in the Spam filter and got 758/1989 for teacher.

I'm sure the answer is staring me in the face.

1 - In Newsbin do a "file save/as" and then note the path but cancel. Don't finish the save as.

2 - In the options/settings select "Open Data Folder"

3 - Make sure the path in #1 is the same path as the newly opened window in #2.

4 - Exit Newsbin.

5 - Make a backup of the Newsbin.nbi file then open the original file with wordpad or notepad.

6 - Search for "[SEARCH" You might find both searchtab and searchpane. Delete them both and variables in these sections.

Code: Select all
[SEARCHPANE]
Bla =1
Tada = 1

[SEARCHTAB]
Bla =1
Tada = 1

[SOMETHING ELSE]
...

So start at [SEARCHPANE] and don't delete "Something else"

Save, start Newsbin and try again.

If that doesn't work. Open the data folder again, then exit Newsbin and move:

Code: Select all
PosterLockout.txt
PosterLockout.txt.old
PosterLockout.txt.bak
Filters.db3

Out of the data folder.

Then start Newsbin and try again.

That'll remove any posters and filters. You can always move the files back if nothing changes.

It's important to exit Newsbin before making the changes because Newsbin will over-write the changes on exit.

Thanks Quade

Deleting the Filters file definitely seems to have worked.

Interestingly there was no

Searchtab in the NBi

and there were no files

Posterlockout.* in the Newsbin folder

If you never locked out any posters then the poster files won't exist.

There's a filter called "Global" that applies to all downloads. I had a feeling there was something in "Global" that was filtering the posts. That's why moving the filters.db3 worked.
