One thing that I neglected to mention in my previous message was that I find that Newsbin is not particularly 'viewer friendly'. Using an Internet NZB search engine is fine if you know exactly what you are looking for but most days I still download the majority of my newgroups into Agent first and then do a search on the posts, (obviously using Agent accessing Boneless and other large groups is impossible), and then I load up Newsbin and perform the actual downloads from that platform since it does a much better downloading job.

However despite being a phenomenal downloading program Newsbin is not particularly friendly to view on a daily basis without having to perform a number of machinations with the filters. I expect this is probably something that is not fixable since Newsbin is a binary downloader whereas Agent is defined to first to access text and then binary but it would be useful to find a way to browse through the groups with an easier access to the text posts.

That said I would be displeased to find that any changes in Newsbin would diminish the downloading of group articles in favour of NZB creation since I still find it very useful to be able to browse the groups.

I'm subscribed to about a dozen groups. I download headers for these groups based on the volume of headers - some once a day, some once a week. Sometimes, I use an old version of the Gravity Newsreader to scan large volume header groups - I find the user interface easier to scan headers, but Newsbin much faster and more reliable at downloading binaries and more efficient in the use of memory.

Like other posters, I use usenet to find both what I know I want and what I didn't even know existed, so the ability to scan newsgroup headers is important to me and I'd much prefer to be able to use 1 tool rather than 2. To do so, the interface for scanning headers would need to be greatly improved.

Just over 60, although much of the time I use about 1/2 that.

Funny to see how many people are 'headering' each day...
I never header anymore, since 2003 I'm using a Usenet indexer.
Find what I want and use a shortcut to an NZB site. The site saves the NZB in the 'automatic download folder' and 10 minutes later, there's a DVD5 fully downloaded and unpacked or repaired and unpacked.
Why 'headering'? I know, several years ago, it was normal to 'header'. But there are a lot of 'bandwith-savers'... 'Header' news:alt.binaries.boneless every day... :( Again a minimum of 1 million headers.

Well, if you are not Dutch (:-)) and don't know what you are looking for until you see it, I have yet to find a better way...

Okay, maybe we are in a luxurious position... Yesterday another Judge (Supreme Court!) ruled in favour of the users. In The Netherlands it is allowed to download for personal use, uploading the files is still prohibited. Only movies and music are are allowed to be downloaded. Games and software are still not allowed. And therefore, there are numerous sites (or programs) which will give information where to download these items.

I was actually more thinking that a lot of the indexing sites (at least when I looked a few years back) seemed to be in Dutch:-)

11, 3 are always open, all at 700+ days and several are in the top 5 largest. NB is currently occupying over 10GB RAM and has been much higher.

I'm downloading more focussed on my wishes, and am using an NZB site to get the nzb's via RSS.
Would also be a nice feature (with sorting).

I'm subcribed to about 20 groups or so, but I have not updated most of them for about 6 months. Now, basically running on NZBs.

I look at about 1000 groups.

I think that my use is not the norm:
1. I have access to high speed download for about 1 month per year,
2. I have to download all of the headers,
3. delete things I am definitely not interested in,
4. download the remaining, perhaps a few percent,
5. spend the rest of the year selecting the small fraction of that for further pursuit.

My net selection rate is about 1 in 1000.

This year I got about 50GB of data from the download latest stuff,
and I am having problems doing step 3. (I will describe the problems and ask
for help in another thread. I am using Windows 7, 8GB, NewsBinPro V6.20, headers
and data on separate SSDs.)
