It varies, about 400 at the moment BUT while I do use binsearch for nzbs I rarely use newsbin to download headers. I find Forte Agent to be easier to set filters in. So I look for stuff on binsearch or in Agent, then download it in Newsbin.

I have roughly 50 subscribed groups but I tend to load headers for only about a dozen of the smaller groups, I use NZB's frequently for specific posts from the larger groups.

I download headers sometimes for around 20 groups.
Mostly when I need something very old (with current retentions of 800+ days) Newzbin raw search just don't cope with it (their current retention is far less... just recently they went past the 200 days). This is punctual and I usually delete the headers after use.
But I also download headers for pictures/comics groups. They usually are much less bigger than the huge (boneless?) ones. For those ones I think I update the headers once a month, with current download speeds it is enough.

Currently 55; I check them in rotation, which takes about 3 months, then back to the beginning. Personally I have no use for super-long retention; in fact I only "download latest" which is still a lot in Boneless, a.b.music, and suchlike. I check through the headers for things of interest, to get to know new stuff (this is supposed to be what Usenet is for, people). If I'm looking for something in particular, I use Binsearch.

I'm mainly using search these days, I used to trawl through headers endlessly but I have most of what I'm interested in and that needs sorting. Still have a few groups on the go but the days of daily downloads are in past, just too time consuming.

about 50, I use nzb only to add group of headers to download list. I download headers for all subscribed groups every few days.

22The ONLY group I need is alt.fan.justin.beeber.or.whatever.his.name.is

ok.. honestly .. I have about 30 groups autoupdated every 12 hours or so in NBP - on my NAS/Newsbin/media server

Max age = current server max store 800 ish days (giga/astra).
I still have not found a reason to lower this - but if there IS a good reason I will do it.

Its really nice

80. Update 6-12 weekly. Astraweb and Newsbin combine for that special feature with the compressed header downloads at the turbo- like speed, so that keeps me downloading headers from even some large groups and possibly I would not be downloading headers very much without that feature. Thanks for that. :D

I like the Newsbin search, but NZB is the way for me with NBZs(dot)ORG and Binsearch.

Much anticipation for 6. :)

Happy Hunting.

Update Edit:
Sorry Dexter.
I do not think your Post had appeared at the time which I began composing a couple hours ago, as had to pause for awhile before submitting, or I would have followed your directions. My apology.

Much like user itempi, when necessary I use http://www.newzbin.com in 'raw or cond usenet' mode to search a group without the need to download headers. Another alternative is the use of usenet search sites eg Binsearch. Place of last resort is to download from a small number of groups.

135, updated daily. No dump groups
35 are split into the two main newsbin groups I look at daily, the others get searched. I probably should switch to internet search, but this does all I need...

I now see that I'm subscribed to about 500 groups altogether on two separate Newbin installations, I sometimes run both of them, sometimes one-at-a-time.
They have groups somewhat contents-specific and have different default download drives/folders and some other settings, etc - that gives some more flexibility,
and perhaps increases the total download speed, especially when using slow USB external drives, not writing everything to a single one on a single port perhaps helps.
It is possible to use different download locations with a single Newsbin, but having two different default locations is convenient

I do not store headers so far for those mass dump groups like boneless,
but I keep up-to date all the headers for hdtv, some multimedia, tv groups, etc, they have quite a lot of headers.
Possibly headers of 50-100 groups are pretty much up-to-date, about 50 on each newsbin.
Many of the other subscribed groups - I do not get headers for them regularly, but many of them are smaller ones and it does not take long to update headers even if there are several hundred days to catch up.

I like headers because when I open a group, I have a visual indication what is already downloaded and what is not (even though I am trying to keep my own DB up-to-date)
When downloading using the newsbin search only, I have no such an indication.
I often use a combined method: use search to find what I need, and then open the proper group at the proper day range to download, so that the downloaded files get marked as downloaded for future reference.

Not to have to download headers at all, I need 2 things:

1. To have a reliable search engine with the day range matching/exceeding that of Giganews, and (perhaps/hopefully) including all/most of the groups, not just some of them - I need to have confidence in it.
Not sure to what degree the newsbin search meets those requirements, perhaps pretty close already? I have to experiment, compare with what I actually have in various groups, etc. Hard to say now.

2. Somehow, to have the search results to show up marked as already downloaded or not, perhaps by matching them with the DB of already downloaded stuff. If it can somehow be implemented - it would be really great (!!!)
Perhaps it can be implemented as a separate action, better than nothing: after getting the search results, select something in them and click "check if already downloaded"

about 115 groups, but I don't actualy check all of them and need to cut some.

I use binsearch.info but the filtering is poor.

is there anyway to handle a group like ab.mom?

how about a setting that loads jpgs first during a massive download of other stuff?

I used to sort through about 100 different groups, but on a 6Mbit it took forever to update a few of them. Then I found binsearch and never looked back. I don't even bother adding groups anymore. Just use advance search with filters and create the NZB. Now that I'm pulling around 20Mbit I just need a few more terabytes :)

I am following about 70 newsgroups. I normally use nzb files but sometimes a nzb file is missing (as in downloading a tv series and a episode is missing). I need to be able to view the headers to find the missing episode. My provider for nzb files only goes back about 300 days. I use giganews and sometimes need to look back 700 days. It would be nice to have a way to view all 700 days of headers at once. I am running Windows 7 Enterprise x64 with 8 Gigs of memory and a AMD Phenom II 965 BE processor. I run out of memory when trying to view more than a 100 days or so of the large groups (like a.b.boneless).

I subscribe to 63 groups. I update these every 1-2 days. I also use NZB search sites to find something, especially if it turns out to be in one of the larger groups. Many times that search results in finding something on an unsubscribed group. Thanks for all your good work. Image link not allowed for unregistered users

I've got 94 listed, in 8 different groups. Of those groups, one containing 23 hasn't been updated in 127 days, so I guess I really only use 71. I suspect a lot of those are probably not that active anyway; I should probably do a pruning at some point.

Unlike a lot of people here, I do download the headers, rather than use indexing sites, because a lot of what I use newsbin for is downloading foreign language stuff (jdrama, that sort of thing). Most of the stuff I learn about either from my friends overseas or from perusing the group listings themselves. I can't really use a search, since I don't know what I'm looking for ahead of time. It's more of a "hmm, that sounds interesting, what is it" sort of thing.

Because of the translation issues, I never know what a series will be called. For example, one series was called "Investigator Mariko", but was also posted as "Kasouken no Onna", "Shin Kasouken", or "Woman of the Crime Lab", depending on the translator (it differed season to season).

What I do is download the headers for, say, a.b.m.japanese, see what's available, and then Google or check a specialty site like http://wiki.d-addicts.com or http://www.jdorama.com for a writeup to determine if it's worthwhile.

One feature I would like to see in v6 is a multi level sort or filter mechanism. For example, sort by poster, and then within that poster, sort by date, or by file name or title. Unfortunately, a lot of posters use the default post engines, so they have the same poster name. So it's common to have poster Yenc-Powerpost post something I'm interested in (like Shin Kasouken or Bloody Monday), and then a few days later another poster, also using the same default name of Yenc-Powerpost, posts a bunch of unrelated and/or spam messages. They are clearly identifiable if sorting by date, but sorting by date shows everything by all posters interleaved. If I could filter all posters by name, and then sort within that sublisting, it would make things a lot easier.

Btw, I've been using newsbin for at least six years or so, and I've been very happy with it.

Subscribed to in newsbin: 49
Pay attention to in newsbin: about 30
Subscribe to in N. so that I can search them for something I just heard of and hope will be
worth the effort: about 10

The bottle neck here would be the time it takes to deal with some nine gigs of data that
NTFS compresses to about seven gigs (That's one group, and not the biggest, and thank you
for the header age option>).

Most of my hands on DL's are from several automated searches I have bookmarked in the
