When i go to log in at the top of the Forums page i enter my user name and password then another page opens with a captcha..and i have to enter both username and password again plus the captcha. Is there a way for me to go straight to the captcha page instead of having to input my details twice.
Thanks

I don't know. I'll ask Dex. There have been several other reports of login weirdness.

Re: Login

Postby mimauk » Wed Jul 14, 2021 11:52 am

I have something similar happening. I usually have the ' RemeberMe' option checked and am automatically logged in when I click on the sites bookmark, but a couple of weeks ago I had to log in manually and had to log in a couple of times as the 'Captcha' did not appear on the first login page. It has happened about once a week since.

I though it might have been because you had increased the security on the site because of one of the nbz indexers getting taken down by hackers for a few days.

I'm usuing Firefox as my browser.

I put the forums behind a load balancer a couple of weeks ago due to some people having issues with the SSL cert. This was a side effect. I'll tweak the LB settings and see if I can resolve this.

Something definatley strange going on...It looks like i am being logged out automatically i went to post in the General forum and hit the submit button and got told i had to login to be able to post (i was already logged in) so i logged in again and was taken back to the post i had typed but it was blank.
So i re-typed the post and hit Submit and the same thing happened.

Not sure what to say. It works for Quade and me and I'm not hearing alot of other complaints. What browser are you using? I'm using Chrome without issues.

Hi Guys - the login problem has popped up again after a month or so of no problems. I have had to log in to the forum three times in the last couple of days and the same security question is being asked each time, if that means anything.

Using Firefox.

I haven't changed anything on this end since then. Sounds like people with non-Chrome browsers are having issues. Did you try bypassing the load balancer? https://forums2.newsbin.com

Hi Dexter

The bookmark for the forums site that I have been using since I joined is to the http forum site and I haven't found any reference to the https forum address.

The link on the top of the Main Page - http://help.newsbin.com/index.php/Main_Page - to the forums goes to the http site. Since the link you provided in your reply is to the https site, I shall use that from now on and see how it goes.

Thanks for the reply.

Every time I log in the forum tells me I have exceed the amount of log in attempts so then it redirects me back to the login except this time I have to answer a question so it knows I'm human and then it logs me in.

Yeah, weird it happens for some people and not others. I'm thinking maybe different browsers handle it differently. If it's too annoying you should be able to get in using an alternative URL to bypass the load balancer. Use http or https://forums2.newsbin.com - the whole reason I put a load balancer in front is because some people were getting SSL errors going directly to the forums and having the load balancer host the cert was a quick solution.

Re: Login

Postby mimauk » Sun Sep 05, 2021 6:24 am

Hi Dexter
Login has got even worse since yesterday. I now have to login every time I enter the site(https version) and each time there is no security question asked.

When I get logged in and leave the site by hitting the back button on my browser (Firefox), without shutting the browser down, and go back to the site - either using the bookmark or hitting the forward button, I have to login again whereas before I was still 'registered/logged in'. It's as if there is no 'cookie' being left with the browser to automatically keep me logged in.

Edit - after hitting the back button on my browser to leave the site, I can hit the forward button several times which will take me back into the site even though the login page appears, hitting the forward button again takes me back into the site to the index Page.

I still have to login every time I go to the site after shutting the browser down - automatically keep me logged in does not seem to work.

Same here. Only started today for me. Also using Firefox.

Just as a counter point, I'm using Firefox and session cookies/active login is (and has been) working as expected - note, I'm not trying to say there's no issue!

In my Umatrix control panel for this forum I have green-lit all first party scripts/cookies/etc but one host (google-analytics.com) is blacklisted.

Re: Login

Postby mimauk » Fri Oct 08, 2021 5:33 am

Finally got the automatic login to work after over a month of having to login each visit. I noticed that my book mark for the Forum had the same long alphanumeric string after it, so I deleted the bookmark and also deleted the saved password in Firefox.

I opened up a new tab and put in https://forums2.newsbin.com - entered my login details and checked the auto login box and then logged in. After being re-directed to the index page, I then bookmarked that page and I get automatically logged in now.

THANK YOU so much!

I have posted a separate thread: "Maybe update the login screen?"
Each time I was logged out...

Do a preview: logged out
Send my post: logged out

The captcha thing and so on...

Driving me crazy.

Again thank you so much for advising the forums2 url !

@Dexter: I coincidentally stumbled over this great solution. Would it not be possible to have users redirected from http (without 's') forum (without 2).newsbin.com to this 'new' site?

Thanks.

Re: Login

It's the same site, one URL goes to a load balancer and the other goes directly to the server. I put a load balancer in place because some people had problems with https going straight to the server. But other people (mostly non-chrome users) are having problems with the load balancer. Hence two different URL's. There doesn't seem to be one solution that works for everyone so that's what we've got.

The underlying forum software is no longer being updated so weird things like this are bound to happen.

That solution only worked for a couple of days. I have to login every morning after I boot up my computer.
Boot PC - click on Forums bookmark - have to login - new bookmark for Forum index page after login - delete previous days bookmark - use new bookmark for rest of day - repeat process next day. Maybe once a week the bookmark works for a couple of days without having to login.

Regretfully email-notifications are still based on old forum link (forum.newsbin.com), i.e. without the '2'.
Hence I use the forum2 URL (saved in my favorites), log in, then search for the thread.

What is your bookmark URL? Make sure it doesn't have a session id in the URL. I use https://forums2.newsbin.com without issues.

If you still have the issue, what web browser are you using? Seems to be fine with Chrome.

Hi Dexter
I am using Firefox and the bookmark url does have a sid.

index.php

I'll remove the sid and see how it goes. Thanks for the reply.

That did not work - it takes me to login page again. It seems obvious now, that the "keep me logged in" option does not work on the login page, at least with Firefox.

@dexter
i believe you are the one when it comes to the the website(?)

There is a post titled "Your connection isn't private". Not sure whether you have read it.

Anyhow, it reads like this

"
Your connection isn't private
Attackers might be trying to steal your information from forums2.newsbin.com (for example, passwords, messages or credit cards).
NET::ERR_CERT_DATE_INVALID
This server could not prove that it is forums2.newsbin.com; its security certificate expired 11 days ago. This may be caused by a misconfiguration or an attacker intercepting your connection. Your computer's clock is currently set to Tuesday, 15 March 2022. Does that look right? If not, you should correct your system's clock and then refresh this page.

Continue to forums2.newsbin.com (unsafe)

The URL looks like this

The old cert expired and I applied a new cert to a load balancer and put the forums behind it. I forgot about forums2 though, I didn't realize it was being used for anything. Looks like that is being used in the forum notifications for post replies.

Anyways, it's fixed now, all traffic now goes through the load balancer with an updated SSL certificate.

Thank you, I am using the forums2 because the forums without 2 logged me out constantly.
See my earlier post.
Logging in on Newsbin regulary poses problems, at least with me.
When trying to login on this forums2, I got this error
"You exceeded the maximum allowed number of login attempts. In addition to your username and...etc"

Okay, entered the forum.

Then I wanted to reply to this thread, I clicked on [Reply] and was logged out again, got this same screen again (exceeded the maximum, blah blah)

Re-entered.

typed this reply, lucky to have made a clipboard copy as I assumed it would go wrong, clicked on submit and was logged out again.

Image

I will try the forums URL.

Yeah, phpbb doesn't play well with the load balancer. I had forums2 bypassing it but now the original SSL cert is expired so if we want SSL it has to be behind the load balancer. I'll keep thinking about it.
