NewsBin64 app crashes frequently

Postby Traveler2530 » Sat Mar 10, 2012 11:22 am

Since I began using your 6.30 beta versions, I've had frequent newsbin crashes after a few hours of running. After this happens a few times, newsbin won't even start. That is, immediate appcrash when I click the desktop icon.

I do a re-install over the top of the current installation (without removing old install). It then runs fine for a few days. It will then begin crashing more and more often, until it won't start again.

Most of the time I'm using my desktop at home for running newsbin. I have newsbin and all of it's config files in a newsbin directory on a 1TB external drive so I can update headers and download files to my laptop at work and school.

Note I get the same newsbin appcrash behavior on my notebook, whether at home or another site. Any ideas? Win7Pro x64 with intel CPUs on desktop and laptop.

Here's a copy/paste from the latest two crashes. The three files at the top were what the Win7 utility identified as trouble causers.

C:\Users\Bender\AppData\Local\Temp\WER92CD.tmp.WERInternalMetadata.xml
C:\Users\Bender\AppData\Local\Temp\WERD653.tmp.appcompat.txt

Suggests it's crashing trying to render images. Is there anything special about the images you're downloading? For example, I've seen some groups where they rename "rars" to "jpg" files. You might search your hard disk and see if you have more than one "FreeImage64.dll" on it.

If you PM me what group this seems to happen in and maybe what sets of files if you know them, I can try it.

I never try to look at images with NB, I simply DL them to a dir and look later with irfanview. NB must be doing it automatically, if at all.

Another possibility: I have Win7 x32 on my notebook, x64 on my desktop. Newsbin 32 and 64 are installed similarly, but I run all from an outboard HDD.

I think I will delete the x64 newsbin from my desktop, and install the x32 version. This may help, what do you think?

I think I've never had a JPG or other image file crash Newsbin so, there's something funky with the files you're downloading. And/or you have another version of the freeimage dll installed on this machine and it's causing compatibility issue. The thumbnail window in Newsbin does display image files so, that's probably where the image stuff is happening.

There's nothing wrong with running the 32 bit version on 64 bit windows. It would be an interesting experiment. What kind PC is this? I wonder if the image stuff is using instructions your machine doesn't support.

Home made with Q6600 CPU, GB-P45-UDR mobo, 8GB G.Skill RAM. Not doing anything with jpg or other image files. I installed newsbin 32 on my 64 bit Win7 desktop. Here's the latest crash:

So, 32 bits doesn't solve it then?

It's probably time for a clean sweep. I'd exit, then move all of the DB files out of the data folder. Then try some downloads. Your errors are sort of all over the map.

Might be worth running a RAM checker too. I assume you NEVER get windows crashes?

Another thing to try, test wise, is to avoid the external drive completely just to rule out issues there, since you're getting pretty odd behaviour and that's a common element for you on multiple system installations.

Yes, the crashes and occassional corrupted dirs made me abandon the idea of having an external drive last evening.

So, say I want to do a 100% new install 100% to an "E:\" drive(now internal), how do I do it? That is, I want the newsbin64.exe and newsbin.nbi, spool_V6.. ALL newbin files in a directory on E:\ drive such as: "E:\Newsbin," "E:\Newsbin\Spool_V6," "E:\Newsbin\Temp," so on.

Directing downloads is not diffiicult, of course.

Thanks!
