NBRemote: WiFi Only?

Didn't see mention of how you connect remotely. Am hoping it's like Splashtop Remote where you can go over home WiFi or using your Google login.

You have to do some setup to be able to use NBRemote from outside your home network!

If you want to connect remotely then you need to use your external internet address, and have set up port forwarding in your router to get the port used by NBRemote forwarded to the PC running Newsbin. To avoid having to actually know you external internet IP address you can use a service like that offered by dyndns.org. Once you have done that you can connect both locally and remotely.

If you don't want to go to the hassle of setting up, can you search/browse and send to your Dropbox to be picked up by Autoload?

I'm interested in grabbing the IOS app while it's on offer over the holiday.

Not quite sure what scenario you are aSking about?

You can certainly do what you mentioned outside NBRemote. I have been doing that for a long time beore NBRemote was available using the iCab browser which supports downloading files and then sending them to Dropbox.

If you are asking if it can be done from within NBRemote if you have no active connection to your PC I am not sure as I have never tried that. I now have NBRemote set up to work over both WiFi and 3G so it is not something I have needed to test.

I meant from within the IOS app. For example, you're on the train with 3G or whatever, you're searching using the app, you find something you want, create an nzb then send to Dropbox and NBP on your pc at home picks it up via autoload.

Actually TBH @ the knockdown price it doesn't overly matter as I'm curious enough to see what it can do anyway. :)

Setting up access from the internet basically involves the following:

1. Make sure the computer you run Newsbin on has a fixed internal IP address.
2. Set up a port forwarding rule in your router/gateway for port 118 and forward TCP traffic to the IP address the Newsbin computer has.
3. If your ISP don't give you a fixed IP, use a dynamic DNS service (like dyndns.org) to get a DNS name for your router.
4. In NBRemote, add a Newsbin computer and set the address to your external IP (or dynamic DNS name).

Setting up port forwarding in your router is covered here: http://portforward.com/.

I have also submitted the details of Newsbin remote interface to them, so detailed instructions especially for Newsbin should be up shortly.

Thanks for the info. Will save the port-forwarding project for another time. Just using it at via my home WiFi network is plenty useful. The ability to search and add to the download queue from my iOS devices is great, as well as checking on the download queue.

If Newsbin had an after-downloading auto-off setting, with the option of Standby, Hibernate, Shut Down, etc; I might get the port-forwarding thing set up. I checked PortForward.com, but didn't see a FAQ yet -- might've missed it though, not the easiest of sites to search.

For the most part though, I'd primarily use remote functionality as a convenience while at home.
